how much mods to firewall needs to be done to fit one in?

i remember someone on here saying there are ways to get around cutting into the firewall? :roll: i think..

ive seem one or two....quite a lot of fabriation to the firewall as far as i no...large box section etc..maybe if turbo was relocated there wouldnt be the need for such fabriation.

yeah, i thought about relocating but that would be a big job. the turbos must be quite big if they dont fit without chopping?

Full Metro turbo setup with the T3 requires bulk head mods.
There are a few manifolds (exhaust) like the Mirage and someone here in Aus (Ben) thats made one which allows you to fit a T2 behind the motor without bulkhead or firewall mods.

If you plan anything newer or bigger than a T2 then you will need to mod the firewall.

If it was me, I would either make my own exhaust manifold and use everything else off the metro turbo
OR
Use a smaller turbo on a mirage or one of Bens manifolds.

You could put the turbo over the clutch housing, but the exhaust would have to be made from scratch.

ok, so if i was to get a t2, i could simply put that in place of the t3?

and when you say:

, i can do either? i could get one of bens manifolds and keep the t3,

or simply get a mirage turbo? and keep everything but the only difference being the turbo?

sorry for the heap of questions. i just want to know what im buying into! :P

- T3 WONT fit behind the motor without bulkhead mods on any manifold.
- T2 WILL fit but the Metro Turbo exhaust manifold uses T3 flanges so WONT fit the actual manifold flange pattern - mods needed to the Manifold flange in this case, not the bulkhead... .
- T2 on Mirage Manifold (its a brand name) or one of Bens manifolds WILL fit

My recommendation is get a new exhaust manifold. Use the Metro turbo Intake, Carby and plenum. In this scenario since your making a new exhaust manifold anyway, use whichever turbo you wish :)

IF you want it behind the motor, then I think you only have 2 choices
1. Modify bulkhead
2. Use Mirage manifold or Bens and a smaller physical turbo (eg/ T2)

If you go a Mirage manifold or Bens, then you might be able to fit a GT17 off a saab or similar.

Checkout turbominis in the UK for pics, specs etc about this.

My personal preference, have the turbo where it can be seen (and worked on :) )

Also, might have a T2 that requires rebuilding going very cheep soon - off my car ;)

yeah, that was another choice, but they are very expensive!

i rekon i can get together a complete turbo setup for under 1K.

and those sc kits are around 2.5K

Hey mate,

The T2 will be bugger all, really. PM'd you about it.

Ill get you details on the manifold... but a few hundred bucks for them... not sure exactly.
SC and Turbo'ign are similar but very different drive.

I love turbo, and everything that comes with it... on a massive V8 - I love SC - massive blower out the top :)

If you can do most of it yourself, then Turbo may work out a fair bit cheaper.

I wouldnt tackle a turbo engine project with any less than about 3.5k.
I'd start with a fairly fresh engine, and make sure to have the turbo, carb, etc in perfect condition. Whether they're new or reco.

T3 conversion for a grand? Sure it could be done, but I don't think it'll be reliable in any way.

I agree, and said that in PM.
IF he already has the Metro Turbo setup (intake, carb, plenum) then $1k is heaps...
If not, then $1k will get you setup, but its a very cheap setup.

If he has the Metro parts already then:
Fuel Pump and Reg $200
Rising Rate Reg $100
Silicone hoses for bends $100
Oil lines $100
Turbo cam (if using one) $150-$200
Dump pipe and exhaust $300

Thats $1k

Have I missed anything?

Again, depends what the build is I reckon - throw the turbo setup onto an old motor, using 2nd hand parts - yeah, might not last as long, could be smokey and not make the best possible power but still works...

I would start with fresh motor and build from there...
When I started it was all second hand parts pretty much. Carb, turbo, etc... and slowly added and changed things.
Then again this was meant to be my 'temporary' motor until I built the beast... and now this has turned into the beast lol

We just threw twin turbo's on a mates 350 chev, threw on eBoost 2 - Turbosmart ultragates, turbosmart bov (with trumpets of course) screamer pipes and chinese ebay turbos ($400each) and made the exhaust up... motor had stock internals and 8.5:1 comp... will run on 7psi for now, and see how long it lasts... the big motor is being built already. When its finished, will keep turning up the boost on this one until it goes bang :lol:
Its fun boosting old motors... AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A SPARE hehe...
