Post subject:  regreased bearing
Hey,
I put a new bearing set into one of the rear hubs the other day. I packed them with grease and did as per the manual and what i read on here. When I compare them to the other side that is not done yet they do not spin as freely as they did before? They dont really freely spin at all. I can turn it by hand easily butwhen you give it a push and then let go it stops traigth away where before it would continue spinning for a few secs.
Did I screw something up? This is even when the castle nut is not done up.

p.s When I say spinning "it" i mean just the hub so its not the brakes.

Properly greased bearings will do that. It's totally normal. as long as there is no mechanical resistance, just the feel of the grease.

THought so but had this nggling feeling in the back of my head that my wheel will fly off on the freeway or something :)

I had the same problem with my new tapered rollers. they almost feel notchy.

I was just going to "see what happens" :?

It's hard to describe a tactile feel in text, but if you flick the rear bearing hub around with your fingers, it should move less than 1/2 a turn (ish) before it pulls up. Their should be little or no noise and the feel should be exactly like you are pushing ball bearings through thick grease.

Any binding of any sort shows that the bearings are over tightened, contaminated or have some other issue and should be looked at. Any binding like a notchy feel, gritty noises or similar will lead to the bearing breaking down very quickly.

Hey,

I know what you mean about hard to describe. It is exactly like trying to push a ball bearing through thick grease as mentioned :) Its a bit like walking in mud in gumboots but not deep mud... or something.

How Tight should the castle nut be? I did mine up so it was tight but not to tight and also so the holes lined up to get the pin thru. That pin was a bastard by the way! Idont want to tighten to much but also not to little

Torque setting is in the book of mini, but I haven't got it in front of me....

Split pin is hyper-important however..well worth the perseverance.

hey,

Torque for rear wheel bearings? My book said to tighten... that was it. I know fronts have a torque setting but didnt think rears did.

The pin is important I am sure. got it in but it took some effort and a bit of hammer work!

They sure do have a torque setting. Everything crucial on a mini has a torque setting published. The manual assumed you would look for this elsewhere to save reprinting the torque setting over and over again.

excellent. Will check it out when I get home then.

sorry for the dumb questions. I am a bit new to this. My mini is in about 8 boxes at the moment and I am just wanting to make sure I do things correctly. Tthe shell is at the panel beaters, the rest is at my Girlfriends dads and I take bits home to work on over the weeks and then visit it on the weekends to do more work. I have rebuilt the rear subframe and now only have the front subframe and engine cleanup to go before I can put it all back together. the shell is not finished yet so no rush.

Would this be the rear taper rollers with the inbuilt spacer? (they come in a blue box, not timken) if so it's quite common as the preload seems too great with them.

While probably not the best idea, I also took the "we'll see what happens" approach, and 2 years later there still going....... Think I'll hunt down some timkens though!

As per John's Mini King Bible Cattledog Page 10 Rear Hub Net (Tightened to correct settings the Align to next slot 60lb/ft or 8.3 kg/m

Yeah I found the section in the mini book when I got home. Didn't know they listed it separately. Only used it a couple of times before.
