I think for a rear cage you have to register the car as a two seater.

You will probably find it is then classed as commercial, so your greenslip will go up to $600 or more, rego too.
Guy at work has a Daihatsu Mira van, he's putting a rear seat and belts in it for this very reason..

Not true Kev, I hade my last car engineered with half roll cage and it made no dif to my green slip.

The most important thing about putting in a 4 point (or half cage) is to make sure you get an engineers report when it is done. Ifyou are thinking of doing a number of things to the car get them all engineered at once and find a good engineer, some of them are way over the top.

Here is a list of things I had engineered on my car and notes that will help. I had it all done at once so I only had to pay for one certificate.

4 point roll cage.
Make sure you put the roll over hoop as far back as the rear pockets will allow. I had to remove mine and redo it because the engineer made me put the seat right back (even if you are short) to check the head clearance to the bars. Once if the car will be classed as a 2 seater and some engineers will make you remove the back seat.

race seats and race harnesses
I had two race seats and two 4 point race harnesses approved for my car which meant I did not have to wear suplied belts BUT YOU DO NEED TO LEAVE THEM INSTALLED.
Because the car is already classified as a two seater you can have harnesses attached to rear shelf. Make sure you use backing plates and usehook and eye harnesses and use present seat belt anchor points.

With the seats they must be on sliding sub frames so they can be adjusted for diffirent drivers. Once I got mine approved I just bolted the seat to the floor.

Dr, i think you are confusing the "private use" vs "business use" part of the rego process. That is what makes it more expensive, not the number of seats. my MR2 had expensive greenslip and insurance, but that was because it was red, not because it had 2 seats

and oz, how can you leave the normal seat belts installed if you are using the normal seat belt mounts for your harness eh? does that mean the old seat belt just dangles from the pillar and the buckle floats around on the floor?

My mate at work had his Mira registered private, RTA told him it would be cheaper if he fitted a rear seat and belts. :?

sounds like a crock of shite to me, and i speak from a professional perspective Dr :D

Just had the wrong person at the RTA i suppose, like all good service providers, it pays to shop around to find the answer you want, take that persons name and quote them :!:

Is the Mira a hatch back? That's what will do it. Hatch back with 2 seats equalls small lorry or something stupid according to the RTA.

Regarding seat belt mounting points/ If you use the Hook and Eye type harness you can remove the bolt that holds the normal belts in place and replace it with an eye bolt so it still holds the road belts in place but gives you something to hook you harness onto.

Yeah, the Mira IS a hatchback. With the stock 2 seats, they call it a commercial vehicle..

Yes Oz I use the eyebolts when I clip the harness in- not sure if street legal, but they are better made than the usual crap chrome plated bolts you get holding seatbelts.

Thanks for the feedback guys...

Im already willing to get an engineering certificate of need be. For the $400 you pay they can save a few hassles.

Looks like i might get myself a half cage then :P

remember, no engineering certificate equals no insurance if you have an accident.

not necessarily. if the insurance company is informed of the mods, they may not require an engineers certificate, but will probably bump the premium through the roof. having said that i only know of one insurance company where they person on the other end of the phone is not
a) a backpacker in a call centre who knows more about the quality, availability and price of ecstasy in Ibeza than car modifications
b) an indian in a call centre in bangalore who knows more about mods to camel harnesses
c) knows nothing except that the "computer says"
