Post subject:  Original underside colour
For those of you interested in all the little details.....

I cleaned the very thin remnants of the old bitumen underseal off over the weekend using a rag soaked in petrol. After four hours I had revealed that the original primer is poo brown. At least it was still there down the centre of the floor. On the outer edges where the wheels kick up stones was just a bit of surface rust in between the thin patches of several different paint colours.

Proof is in the photos below before i covered it all in a new layer of bitumen underseal :D

How did you manage to remove the underseal so cleanly Mick? Acetone or something worse?

Michael,
You are a Champion or some kind of super human. Managing to get the underside that clean with the car up on those four stands and working on your back is some kind of achievement. Well done mate.

Mick - it was just plain 95 octane petrol. I figured that bitumen, being an oil based product was likely to be soluble in petrol. a bit of help from a paint scraper on the thicker bits after a soften with the petrol didn't hurt either.

Harley - battery cable runs through the interior, but popped down to connect to the floor starter. This will change with the new starter that has an integrated solenoid.
Gear shifter is a KAD one that has two uni joints allowing the mechanism to go through the original 850 shifter hole. The shifter is solidly mounted to the floor so it does not suffer from that loose feeling that you can get from a rubber mounted rod change.

no it is definitely the paint/primer colour. i see this colour when i sand through the many layers of paint on the top half of the car as well. this is just the first time i have seen an unadulterated large patch like this.

i humbly admit to being a champion :lol: it was meant to say four hours, but hey it is not the sistine chapel. i find that sometimes patience is what you need. although i am kind of stiff and sore around the shoulders now.

Mick, I am pretty sure that is from the rotodip, and not a primer....though I have been wrong plenty of times before though lol

yeah that's right. the rotodip was a two part process of a clean and metal preparation, then a primer.

ah so i was mostly right lol, dont envy the job you did though, I started removing the underside like that when I done mine....found it was easier using a heat gun and scraper....then a wire wheel, so I could por15 the bare metal....messy mongrel of a job either way lol
