| Post subject: | Bootlid closing together |
after months of opening my bootlid on average 5 times a day, my bootlid is still solid at the hinges, but is coming in close contact to the body. its about 1mm off in the right hand corner and im not sure if its gonna get closer. what can i do to prevent this? im afraid that they will come together, cracking the paint |

you'll find that the hinges may be tight, but they can still gradually move over time.... the holes that the hinge bolts go thru are not round, so you can actually adjust the position of the lid. Simply loosen the nuts running along the inside edge of the boot floor (on the left hand side only), lower the hinge a couple millimetres, then retighten. check this and redo if necessary. it should be fine.....

*change that thought....... check to see if the right hand side has dropped - first!!!! If it HAS dropped (gap running under the window gets wider to the right) then you will need to raise the right hand hinge. Same technique as above, but loosen the RIGHT hand hinge nuts slightly(on bodywork, not bootlid) lift the hinge a couple mm, retighten, check, redo if necessary.... voila!! |

Will this also alleviate the problem caused by putting on new rubbers..? I just put on some great new rubbers, and now I need three people to help close the boot..!!! Its damn water tight which is great.. but I have images of the hinge busting open and the boot flying off or something similar. |

my boot hinges are also coming loose one stud isnt being held by its nut so i've come to respect the bootlid and treat it with care you should check your boot hinges, make sure theyre tight and not rusty |

I dont like to be held by my nuts either. Regarding the hinge, do you have a spring washer under the nut? These usually stop the nut from working loose. If not, put one on. If you do, remove the nut, put nail polish on the thread, then tighten the nut back up. Nail polish works like Loctite.

I have the exact same thing with JAM...even 3 months after fitting the rubber, it's still a bitch to close. |

try to avoid spring washers on corroded old bolts.. use nyloc nuts instead.. spring washers put uneven pressure on the stud as you screw it in.. nylocs rule! haha |

has anyone used that rubber softner..? I was told to try that. Or Vaseline.. I just dont want vaseline all over the paint work |
