Post subject:  Quality of New Synchro's
Hi All,

Are the new synchro's which you can get from most suppliers of a decent quality?

I remember hearing somewhere that they are prone to wear and their shape causes them to have a limited life span. Or are some better than others?

I am yet to check and measure mine but just wanted to hear other people's experiences and opinions.

Often synchros can be re-used if not worn out, if .020" is surface ground off the face that goes towards the gear.
The very best baulk rings are those used in the old 3 synchro boxes, they had forging marks on the outside that look like an M or W. Bulletproof.

Current ones are generally sintered iron, I have had good and bad from various suppliers. Take a gear with you, try a new baulk ring on it. If it rocks about or is oval, don't buy them- find another supplier. :wink:

I try to talk people out of buying new baulk rings, even the genuine rover ones .Like kev says the best are the old ones with the cuts on the outside,

Regressive Engineering. :evil: If they could make proper syncro rings 45 years ago with a furnace and an anvil :wink: , surely we can do at least as well with our modern metallurgy and high-tech equipment. It's not just restricted to Minis either, try buying decent after-market syncros for Datsun gearboxes and you'll have the same problem.
Similar issues have arisen with the strength of new gears and clusters sourced from the UK.
Do as Kev suggests and find some decent old units. I'm annoyed with myself for throwing away so many old rings (and other components) that could have been reused today. :roll:

Lots of other things in a Mini can be re-used.
eg. don't throw away gearbox mainshafts just because the nose bearing journal has worn through the case hardening, I can machine them to take an INA roller bearing inner ring and they will outlast a new one. Then, you just change the ring... :D

With Mini selector forks now worth 2-1/2 barrels of crude oil each, I'm looking at rebuilding them too... :wink:

We've been doing that to FIAT 124 gearbox forks too. They wear out faster than the syncros mainly because drivers rest their hand on the shifter :roll: . But you'd know that Kev, being an ex-Fiatisti :wink:

I rebuilt 2 selector forks for my boss's `Clubby GT' 12 years ago with SBA45 silver solder- it's hard, has high MP, good wear characteristics and flows on nice.
But, the motor and box is still sitting on a pallet... so might have to do some more for R&D. :wink:

Thanks for all your input.

I will take them to work and machine them if they need it.

My 3 Synchro box was perfect before the idler gear bearing let go so I will reuse those 3 and find the best in my newly acquired K box (Thanks Doogie).

The motor and k gearbox gets rebuilt in the coming weeks :D

Gee thanks a lot guys - Just rebuilt the gear box and put new MiniSpares UK baulk rings in :evil: - I kept the old ones cause they didn't look too bad but I threw out some baulk rings from a 3 synchro box a while back. At least if everything goes belly up in that department I have another 3 synchro box sitting here :roll:
