just need some help identifying one of my engines that came out of a 71 clubman.

Markings on the gearbox are = M/4973

There is also a little silver tag that says 1000 on it (998cc? ) and across from that is...

497

Markings on the head are = 9F/SA/L/28609

anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.

I think (someone else will confirm) that it's a 997 cooper engine .

so if i was to buy an engine rebuild kit from minisport, id go for the 1000cc kit, yes?

Not sure what comes in the engine kit but a 997 engine is different bore and stroke to a 998 , bearing's could be different too . best to wait till you have confirmation of the engine size (including head off and measure bores since numbers can be changed) and talk to the suppliers .

If it really is a 997 Engine you would be better off selling it and getting an 1100 to rebuild. They weren't a great engine from all reports but it might be gold to someone who is restoring a 997 Cooper.

My brother bought a 1962 997 Cooper in 1968 and the original engine had been replaced with an 1100. A common mod in those days.

Genuine 997 motors would be rare and possibly valuable. May even fund your rebuild.

Im restoring a 75 clubman, no idea what motor it has though, by the looks of it its also a 997.

ahh, dont mind me then, i just remember (i think it was you anyway) looking for parts for a 997, so i guess i just kinda assumed

This engine number would have been in a 997 cooper, they had a longer stroke than the 998 and had a nasty habit of throwing a leg out of bed ( con rod out through the side of the block.. Usually the back of the motor)

Number corresponds to a 997 Cooper, but as John Says, you would have to measure the bore and stroke to confirm.

N.B. The number is on the block, not the head.

Does this block have a manual fuel pump hole on the back?
