my clubby did that to me on the side of the monash freeway at 3am. Thanks to a nail file, it turned out the points were a bit crappy, she has purred just fine for the last 6 months. Check your points as well man

Check the distributer clamp or locking bolt(depending on A or A+) , could be loose allowing it to set it's own timing . Also check/adjust/clean the points . How old is the fuel and how well sealed is the tank (how dusty was the farm?) ?

Just undo the screws that hold the carby dash pot down & have a look to see how flithy the dash pot bell & carby piston is,,, it might be filthy dirty & making the piston stick

does it idle nice at all?

& yeah maybe clean out the carby float bowl & blow thrugh the jet while it`s all apart

at least once you`ve done that then you iknow it`s all good in there anyways & if it isn`t the problem then at least you`ve eliminated that part from the equation,,, it`s not hard to do & you really can`t stuff things up, just remove the bell & piston, clean them both really well & take the float lid off & clean the bowl out & add a fuel filter & see what happens

K?

swap out the plugs.

it will have fouled them, most likely have to go one hotter (recommended for the LRP that we have now).

i have had this with one of my older minis, if you idled the car for two minutes before shutting off the engine, it would start on the two centre cylinders. but never would it start on four.
on the other hand, if you pulled a few revs then shut it off, i would always start on four and run fine. it was running a webber, high compression and a big cam, but even my 850 will give me issues if i let it idle too long and just turn it of (i now always carry spare plugs)
