Post subject:  urgent help-rod change box won't go into reverse ????

hi guy's

got a rod change clubby, that you can't select reverse (but last week it was good as!)

so i got under the car and levered the "rod" into reverse. it goes in but it's "firm" and doesn't "click" as it should, (not sure that its fully engaging, but you can back the car up)
it's hard to tell where the resistance is happening, weather it's the shifter or the box?

so then i pulled the "plate" off the bottom of the shifter, every thing appears good in there. tried to select reverse and still can't (all other gears are OK)

as far as i know the reverse switch (which has been broken off) should not affect the shifting ability.

does anyone have experience with this problem? or any ideas of how to fix it, without removing the box from the car?

Its either inside the gearbox or its outside.

So before you pull the motor and drop the gearbox lets check the outside bits first.

There are two "cotton reels" that attach the change mechanism to the floor of the car - make sure they are in good shape and properly tightened up. Also that the the metal brackets arn't all bent out of shape. Either of those things will give you a pretty sloppy change and difficultly in getting reverse.

There two bars as part of the rod change. The top bar is a tempered and angled (in places) steel rod. Make sure that is properly bolted to the outer part of the gearbox. The lower rod is straight and this is the part that actually changes the gears. There is collet (cover thingo) that is held in place by two "roll" pins. At the end closet to the gearbox is a small stub coming out of the gearbox.

At the other end of the collet thingo is the movable rod from the shift change stick. Have a real god look at the condition of the roll pins and the collet. You will need to lock the gear box in reverse and use a suitable sized drift with a hammer to knock both of the out. If the collet is damaged or the pin holes worn - replace it. Its not a harbour bridge priced item.

If the roll pins are damaged replace them. Put the whole thing back together - get it out of reverse and see how it goes then. If still problems - undo the round cone that hold the shift change in place from inside the car and check everything in there. Make sure nothing has come unstuck or broken.

Once you have done all that and you still have a problem then its in the gearbox and others are better able to help you than me. But usualy change problems are in the things I have written about.

you are lifting the stick upwards then moving it across ? andnot just trying to move it across - it is different to a remote box which some people get mixed up
