Post subject:  Repro parts that just don't fit properly
Nearing the end of my car's `resto' I'm getting a bit pissed off with some things bought new from Mini shops lately that just don't fit like the originals did.

Examples:
Windup window outer seal (weatherstrip)- too thick to fit in clips (new or old)
Windup window inner seal (felt)- too thick to fit in clips (new or old)
Boot seal clips (26)- too wide to fit holes in boot
Boot seal rubber- 2 examples from 2 suppliers, both harder than original. One ridiculously so.
None of these parts were cheap, IMO the suppliers should ensure they are suitable for the purpose.

I got NOS window seals from a friend but now need to go find him good replacements..
As for the boot seal clips, I resorted to using contact cement, the clips will go back to the supplier. :x

Doc, I got the same problem with the boot seal. It is too thick and when you close the boot the shut line looks like something out of Eastern Europe in the '50's.

You Are correct Doc There are some parts that I just do not carry at present because they do dot fit, and the boot Rubber is one of them
I have not found one yet that is any good,
I am lucky with the clips I still Have some N.O.S
It is frustrating when I buy parts and they change the way they make them but do not tell me, Sometimes I do not know there is a problem until I sell one and the poor customer finds that it does dot fit

i agree too doc with the window strips, especially when your paying $50 a pair for something that doesnt fit seems stupid to me.

As for these weatherstrips you can get exactly what you need from a good MG patrs supplier. While a little too long, which can be easily trimed to length, MG B ones are exactly the same section and fit perfectly and when fitted look absolutely factory.
Hope this helps with one of your problems at least?

Most stuff is crap now, i had a new coil fail in a week, a MK1 pig tail for the dizzy fail in 2 weeks, repo grill moustaches just don't fit, slave cylinders need to be modded to work properly, etc etc i guess everyone has something to say on this topic.

This is the problem we found with the boot lid seals.
We now only sell the ones to the left of image.
But in saying that boot lids are hard to close after a new seal is fitted.

I used MGB weather seals on my doors as shown by sitnlow. The supplier I got them from just said "these are better, cut the to length". I did and have never had an issue.

Yep, thanks guys, my mate had MGB ones for me and they fitted fine after trimming.
I'll pay a visit to Smithfield tomorrow for replacements. :wink:

One other thing- find some NEW clips for these seals, they hold so much better than old ones do.

Thanks for the info Andrew, after I still couldn't close this sucker tonight with 2 people pushing, I've had enough. You will get my order for one tonight... :lol:

ps. It would be nice if I can get it here Thursday sometime... otherwise I'm going for blueslip inspection on Friday with NO boot seal, or this one slit in half.. :P

John, I remember well your frustration back in 1990 or 91 when I bought a hydraulic brake light switch off you at Mini Kingdom for my Deluxe and took it back the next day because it didn't work. You got the box out and we tested them all on the counter. Every single one didn't work! :oops:

These switches are not much better now, last one I got lasted 3 weeks.
I finally converted to a late Clubby mechanical switch.
