Post subject:  Advice - clubman GT shell.... whats it worth?

Hey all,

Found a clubman GT shell. Its a complete car however the engine and brakes are gone.
It now houses a 1100 with drums all round. It was done years ago. The shell has all
the signs to suggest GT and the body number and compliance plate match, and body
stamp behind the master cylinder indicates GT also. I've been asked to make an offer.
What is this vehicle worth? It has a little rust in front corners of floor driver and pass
side, and front right guard has a little rus in top corner other than that quite straight and
tidy. Still wearing original orange paint. Can i have some ideas or suggestions please?

I reckon the bare shell is worth about $1.5K.... depends what else is there though - correct interior, gauges, right hand tank?

Still has guages however someone has put another back on the speedo making it
km/h. Tanks gone too... Still has orginal body mould flares. It looks just like
any other mini from afar. Ashame someone has bastardised it to this degree, however
all is repairable. Brown interior there, front seats damaged but still complete. Still
has original leyland key for ignition. :)

Not as yet no sorry. I have one on phone which i cant send to pc as i dont have cables
with me. The other concern i have is body number is 6# (cant fully make out last number)
Body number is 573 and complianced in July 1971. If this is the case it must be car # 60?
GT Register shows cars below, would mine fit in the middle? why is there a varience of
11 numbers in car number but only 1 different in body no?
553 34 Jul-71
584 61 Jul-71

any insite muchly appeciated

I reckon Simon's on the mark.

A complete one sold recently on here (running but smokey) with ALL the bits on it, including the gear knob for around $3,750 from memory.

Now THAT's a bargain!!

Cheers,
BC.

yeah, $1500 would be a bargain.

I bought mine originally like that - as just a shell, and have steadily got the parts as they came up, except the engine and interior.

Things like RH tanks you can get on ebay, the speedo (120mph) is the same as those in marina coupes.

The wheels come up occasionally on ebay or on here, and the early ones have late cooper s motors - available, but exxy.

Replica badges and gear knobs are around and will be fine if you can't get an original.

But basketweave interior? priceless!

cheers! jon

The badge should say clubman GT.

I picked mine up 95% complete for $800   , now that was a bargain.

just check the tabs in the boot, that the right-hand tank strap brackt is spot welded on Not bolted like cooper s's. check if there are any tabs on the inside of the front valance near the subframe for where the oil cooler bolted on. and check for a hole under the backseat on the passenger side. btween the floor and the seat

The number on the firewall behind the master cylinders should be
m2
23
XXX

mine is an 11/72 and the difference between my body number and compliance plate number is 501. there should be a difference of around 500. Radiator shroud should say YGS8 XXXX

To tell whether the guages are correct check the tacho - as it should red-line at 6500 Not 5500 as all other mini s triple clusters did, which wers alos in km's as well. So could be a mini s cluster

If the shell is fairly rust free yeah i would say around the $1000 mark (but im a cheapo  ) But always offer something low and work your way up.

May be worth posting this question on www.clubmanGT.com.au

Brown interior.... hmmm you wont want that you will have to sell it to me, as yours would have basketweave aqnd brown isnt original

Goodluck with it.

My mate has a Cooper S he found in a garden (what's left of it, poor thing...) it only has a difference of 260 or so.
How the shells got routed through the paintshop affected this number, so they say.

That is what I have worked out as well. They made the bodies, stamped the body number and then painted the body and later on assemble the car and stamp the car number.
From what I can gather they painted them the same colour in batches (probably to minimise overspray and to simplify the paint booth). So they might have painted 50 red cars in a row (of various different types, Minis and Kimberleys and 1500s etc.)
So you end up with a heap of red shells in sequence. When they went to assemble the bodies into cars they would not make them in colour sequence, they might make a green one and then a red one etc.
So the body numbers get out of whack with the car numbers.

To those that don't know the body numbers start at 1 and the car numbers start at 501. So in theory there should be a 500 difference. But it very rarely works that way.

Add to that the fact that some shells were taken from the line for warranty reshells (not very many but I've heard of it happening a couple of times) or competition car reshells and the likes .
