mid `70s, my guess is around `73-74 when they went from Oz 1098 motor to imported 998 and rod change.. They're a good dizzy, even better after you stick a Pertronix ignitor in them.. ![]() I've got a Clubbie 1098 here, it has a 29D which I think is original. |

So didnt the cooper S's have a 45D from mid-late 60's? And my mechanic reckons electronic ignition is a major pain in the arse w/o any obvious benefits. Is he exagerating again? |

Early Cooper S all had a 23D (like a 25D, but no vac, and 32oz points). Later ones, I'm not sure, and my manuals don't help. My Clubby GT (MK2 S motor) had a 45D without vac, not sure if was original- I doubt it. I run a 45D (non-vac) with a Pertronix in mine, a stock 45D in the Clubbie, and a 59D in the A+ (if car is ever finished..) ![]() |

Also what are the actual benefits of the Petronix? |

Benefits of a Pertronix.. 1. No more points to adjust or replace. 2. Timing stays set for long periods (mine is still right after 12 months). 3. Fatter spark- you can run up to .035" plug gap with stock coil. 4. Wear in the dizzy bearings won't hardly affect the timing as there's no points. 5. No points bounce. My motor used to get rough and lose power over 7000, now it's smooth to 8000+! 6. As long as the coil stays dry, no more wet weather ignition problems. I can hose mine now.. ![]() ![]() <edit> where do ya get it??? You can buy here and get ripped off, buy off MiniSpares and get ripped off less, or buy here- http://www.vintageperformance.com/retro ... /lucas.htm |
