When I put my Rover engine in I re-stamped or should I say stamped it. The Rovers have the number stamped on a plate which is riveted to the block, I checked and a plate is illegal, in QLD at least.
I'd say stamp it but if your not sure call the transport depo and ask them.

So that doesn't happen to people in the future, just ask GR or your engine rebuilder to PLEASE leave the number pad intact when they deck it.
There is no real reason to deck it all off, except forgetfulness or laziness.. :wink:

Whithout going into details, I would Strongly suggest that you take the advice given by Scotta_74

to restamp the numbers on the block? GR has shaved the block to get the flat top pistons flush and part of the engine number is virtually gone and the rest is very faint. The beginning is there but the last 3-4 numbers are a guess unless you know what they are meant to be. A few years dirt and they will be gone.

It seems like one of those subjects where you could end up in a lot of paperwork if you asked Qld Main Roads.

Wombat, I can only give you my opinion in regards to NSW issues. In the circumstances, I can see no problem with the block being restamped. HOWEVER, I would strongly suggest having the entire number restamped as a partial restamp may result in questions being asked. If you are overstamping the numbers that are still on the block, I would be very very carefull as a mis- strike or double stamp will certainly complicate things further. When I had to get my 850 registered, the block was an imported A+ with the metal shim on it which RTA didnt like and issued me a number to put on. No one was willing to stamp the block and I eventually payed to loan some stamps and did it myself. This to me is certainly a different issue that the "Other" reason for restamping. Cheers, Scott

When I took the mini for blue slip the guy didn't like my numbers, as they were in different fonts and not in a straight line. So, I'm guessing no. But he said just to get it checked by the RTA once the car passed an inspection. But then again, there are four extra numbers on my block, and they don't match what engine should be in the car

If possible, have Graham completely remove the number so there will be no faint traces of the original numbers left, before you restamp it. Otherwise you may have hasssles at rego time. Cheers,

Tampering with engine/chassis numbers is an arrestable offence under federal law. even if it is stamping the same number back on

Clean up the surface to just past the front face of block. I can do it, GR can do it, so can anybody with a mill or surface grinder.
