Post subject:  Brake failure
Driving home from Smithfield in Barney today I touched the brakes (not hard), there was a slight ker-lunk from under the car as the car ran over something. Instant loss of pedal.
Thinking something vital had broken and I had no spares with me anyhow, I drove home slowly using the handbrake.. :shock:
<edit> I should have stopped.... :lol:

Long story short, it had spat out the inner brakepad from the LH caliper.
No sign of the splitpins, but the outer pad was still there as the Contessa wheel trapped it.
So, I got another set of EBC Blackstuffs from my local brake place, stole a pin from the RH caliper and it'll get me to Mini Suzuki (gently) tomorrow for some more pins.

Q.... do you guys religiously fit new splitpins or re-use the old ones?
Once upon a time, new pins and anti-squeak shims came in the pad box, but not any more.. :evil:
This is the 1st time I've lost a pad in over 40 years Mini'ing. :?

I never reuse a split pin anywhere on a car.
Nothing special, just buy a bag of them from a hardware store.

I've reused split pins when they're clearly not fatigued, but never with the brakes..

These pins were new 1 pad set ago, I bought them at Bunnings. They were too long of course, and did feel very soft to cut.. Chinese cheesteel I bet. :lol:
Amazing how they can take good Oz iron ore and turn it into cheap rubbish.

Decent splitpins are getting hard to find. :x

That`s a pretty rare one Doc,,, i have seen it happen on a customers cars before (a long time ago when i was at ReadSpeed) but only the once... & to think that i actually raced for quite a few years in my little red sunshine with only coat hanger wire through the pads,,, ar,,,er,,,um & through the cv nuts too :-) serious :-)

I have some genuine "S" pad pins here in stock if you`re stuck for them :-)

Wow Doc! scary!

While we are talking about cooper S split pins, I found the ones I got with my last set were car too big. I had to "reduce" their diameter on the grinder slightly... thinking maybe I should change them now :lol:

I don't think I've ever replaced a split pin though I only change pads once in a blue moon. What are the odds of both pins failing? It's not as if they carry much of a load, they only locate. Any chance you got distracted at the crucial moment and forgot to bend the ends out?

Are you sure someone isn't trying to get rid of you ? Just seems a little odd for both of them to go . When did you replace the brake pads and when did you have the wheel off last (if it was only a few hundred k's ago I'd be seeing if nursemini has taken an extra insurance policy out on you ...) ?

i found it rather difficult to find split pins that long from the local supercrap or Bunnings....I ended up getting them as part of another order to a mini place....

These were 3mm Chinese softies too, and too long as usual. :roll:
I put 2 in for now.

Surely somebody sells engineering quality 1/8"x 2-1/2" split pins still... I might try my local bearing shop next. :wink:

Toranas used a metal pin with a tiny R-clip to hold the pads in. I wonder if something similar exists?

There is a QH set with the metal shims and the pins available, I got it from my local mini place. The pins seem decent quality and the right dimensions too!

I got them after I drove to bunnings, repco, bursons, and a bolt store trying to find split pins to fit, to no avail...

Just about all Cooper S pad sets had these included in the box, once upon a time.

Of course, when I lost the pad, the shims went west too. So I took the other side out as well. I suppose now they will squeak...
