g'day all what would cause my mini when you start it up to put your foot down and it back fires out the carb?and when you put it in gear and drive it kind of surges power no power power no power? could this be because of carb getting too much fuel?

could it be running too lean? you get backfire through the carb when the fuel mix is too lean, and backfire through the exhaust when too rich,

i know this is true as my old weber used to backfire through the carb on cold mornings when the air was denser, and caught fire to my air filter element once!

You don't just haphazardly screw the mixture knob in an out or you will cause all kinds of problems, you need to get the manual and follow it step by step to give it a tune.

leak on the manifold gasket on the inlet ports would cause backfiring through the carb as it's diluting/leaning out the fuel mixture.

Is your advance working in the distributor and is your PCV in good order (I assume you have PCV?)

Ollli suffered what you are describing and this is one more easy thing to check.....especially since your distributor has been looked at recently.
