A friend has told me that by advancing my distributor a bit I will get instant more power! is that correct? will I have to adjust my Carbs? THanks once again guys!! ![]() |

you will only get more power if it is retarded at the moment and advancing it will bring it back to where it should be. what exactly does he mean by adjusting your carbs? If you are worried about your timing, get a timing light and check it. |

Factory timing figures are "safe" figures to allow for variations in the fuel octane. You can sometimes get a little more power by advancing the distributor until the engine "pings" and backing it off a tad until the pinging stops. But you need to know what pinging sounds like! If you leave it pinging too long you can burn valves or pistons. Generally (classic) Cooper S are running right on the edge of pinging at the stock timing when running Premium anyway, so I doubt you will gain much if anything. |
