Post subject:  Polishing windscreens

OK my car is back on the road, this time I used a windscreen from another car as mine was well blasted.
There are no chips or blasted bits, but it has what can best be described as a stain or fog on it in places.
1/2 a bottle of Windex, later it's still there.
I have tried toothpaste, also Autoglym glass polish. The latter cleaned it up nice but it's still like looking through a dirty screen.
Any ideas?
I wonder if some dill got it tinted sometime.... :?

Could be moisture seeping into the lamination perhaps? (I have a small section like that at the bottom of one corner on mine). If that's the case, I am not aware of a cure (other than replacement). Is it worth talking to Windscreens O'Brien or other windscreen repairers about possible cures?

New windscreens are relatively cheap...

It's a Clubby one, zone toughened- NOT laminated.
I guess a breakage could be the solution if all else fails...
But, would be a pity, as it doesn't leak now.

ive used steel wool before to get thats smear of the window when i spilt prepsol on it in the garaged worked fine. but that was on a commadore screen it didnt scratch my glass but im not sure about yours if its the same so maybe try a small section first. a mechanic told me the trick at work.

Years ago we used to use a buff on them with cutting compounds and then work up to a polish...not sure if it was legal, I seem to recall someone explaining it caused too much reflection to on coming traffic of a night time.....sounded like BS to me, but you never know

I had a mate that used to work for autocare (the import yards) and they used a special stone/pad for the scratches they found whilst detailing. Obviously these were on new cars so it's unlikely they would have been significant marks.

Found this info that may be of use

http://www.facetingmachines.com/polishing_glass.shtml

And this place sells a kit

Or just the polish

Doc...first try a good go over with a single sided (Safety!) razor blade or two...at least once per year...the extra life you get out of your wipers will amaze you!!

Ive got a similar problem with some nos factory tinted side glass. Was still in the original Leyland plastic and has permanently marked the glass, gave it a "cloudy" look in places and can see a square where the sticker on the plastic was. Tried all sorts of cleaners and bon ami. Made the glass nice and shiny but did not remove the offending marks
