It's 12A1456, yeah it's for a stocko 998.
a 12G202 (1098) head is better, but the old 1456 can be ported out the same way, it's just more work (more metal to come out) to get to the same level.

am i better of going the 202 or stick with the one i have and port that?

A 202 is better to start with because ports are bigger and so are the inlet valves. Just bolting it on stock is worth around 3 or 4HP.
A 295 is better still, in stock form..

Doc...but if he ported and polished (shaped the combustion chamber) his existing head...and skimmed it to bring the compression up (maybe hardened seats)...would that be just as good :?:

Not unless he fits bigger inlet valves, reshapes and deshrouds the chambers, decks it and enlarges the ports a lot.
Around 2x as much work as porting a 202 head, IMO.

Ohhh? do tell :!: ...so 202 is reasonably desirable for that reason alone 8) :D
