from what i have read the 266 cam is a good cam, is a better version of the 731 which is old school.

I dont have this i just know people say it is good for a daily, i would suggest you ring Graham Russell and tell him what you have and what you want ie for daily and then send him a camshaft and he will grind it to that specs

I Like the good old Wade 104. Some would say old school but then if it aint broke why fix it?
In my opinion very hard to beat in a daily driver!

If you have the specifications a good cam grinder can make the cam you want for less than $150, a Kent MD274SP is a cam I am very keen on using on a future 1100 build, lots of torque !

I run a Wade 104 in the wife's 1293. It's a good allround cam for a daily, but for use in a 1275 it's a bit short on lift (as was the old 731).
So, it runs Toyota Corolla rockers, 1.46:1 ratio. 8)

IMO an RE13 cam is the best one about now if you want good midrange and top end zing in a smallbore. Use with standard or 1.3:1 rockers.

My engine re-build is just about done and from where I began I am keeping the block, crank and head. It will run 60 thou over with twin 1.5" S.U.s and a 266 cam. In a couple of weeks I will be able to tell how it goes. At the moment it's just fingers crossed.

I'll chuck in another vote for the Wade 104. I run a +.040" 998 with twin 1 1/4" carbies. Its a great smooth cam, but I've had experience with the 731 as well and its also great for the road. My observations are that the 731 has a smaller power band (from about 3500-4000 upwards) but the 104 is smooth through the whole range.

Just my two cents anyways

Cheers
Steve

Just to add a bit to the docs post....

After speaking with GR a couple of weeks ago about this same question...the re13 might be a bit too much for a daily in a standard to mild daily driven smallbore....I want to run the RE13 on my 1166 with a 12G295 head because I live rural I dont have to worry about sitting in traffic....I have open roads to play with every day :P , and as such the head will require longer valves to reduce the risk of spring binding....now this can be done by either using longer length valves, which GR gets made, or by seating the valves lower in the head which will in turn raise the CC's of the chamber lowering your CR....

If I was not going to have the longer valves put in, GR suggested a less radical cam...which I think is the 266?

I've tried lots over the years: BL factory, Wade, Waggot, Piper, Kent, now GR.

All in 1275 up engines. BL's 649 and Wade's 1760 were good race cams, better than the Sprint/ Super Sprint IMO. But a bit too over the top for regular road use. For a daily user I found the Wade 140 was quite good, better than the 266 which ran out of puff a bit too soon for my liking, or the 731 which was pretty lame. 276/286 are ok but nothing special.

Haven't tried the Swiftune cams which seem to have mixed reviews.

The RE13 beats them all for all-round regular use, reasonably good in traffic and huge mid range torque right where you need it.

Not sure how it would go in a small bore though for everyday purposes. Generally, the bigger the capacity of your engine the wilder you can go with cam profiles.

While we're on this topic (which I know next-to-nothing about)...

Can anyone tell me what is meant by Stage 2 with relation to cams - what does it mean, I understand that a Stage 2 upgrade will include a cam which is more suited to spirited driving than daily commuting and this is known as 'Fast Road', which is not as 'fast' as a race cam - is that correct??

What other 'Stages' are there? 1/2/3...?

What else is involved?

I only ask as i recently discovered that my engine has a stage 2 type cam of some sort (which has solved the question of why it;s always had such a lumpy idle)
