Hi guys, Found this little thing unplugged in my engine bay just close to the charcoal canister. Can anyone please identify what it is, what does it do and is it supposed to be plugged to something? ![]() ![]() Thanks in advance, Daniel |

Fuel pump supposed to be on the other side, no? Isn't that too small to be a fuel pump? |

Just a guess based on the size and type of hose on top of the item (looks to have been connected to something at some point) either a vacume sensor or some kind of anti run on sensor. I assume your car is running a rover motor possibly injected (single point). Electric fuel pumps are usually located at the back of the car near the tank (or in the tank). |

Yeah, it's a Rover engine, but still carby. That thing is probably only 5-7cm long. |

How about a windscreen washer pump? |

Well, I don't recognise it and I studied the SPI laboriously at the beginning of the year when my car was having 'issues'. That elbow at the top is the type you get for the vacuum lines, though. Maybe it's off an MPI? |

I would guess that it is some sort of purge valve for the emissions canister. |

Thanks guys... Got the answer from Asphalt at TMF. Quote: That was fitted to most mid-80's 998 engines.
It's a valve which enables the distributor's vacuum-advance in fourth gear. They fitted it due to some emission rules or something along that way. Just leave it away. Your engine will run better without it. And I don't think it does anything effective to emissions biggrin.gif wink.gif But if you want to plug it on: Put it between the carb's vacuum take-off and distributor. Cheers, Jan Seriously, all these emission stuff on Rover Minis are very annoying. |
