I was looking for some other stuff and I came across a 12g948 cyc head. Could anyone tell me what it is off please

Looks like a 1275 9 stud head

It will be 12G940, not 12G948. Most 1275 heads (except the 12G1316 smog head) right up to the late models had this number, God knows why..
This number is cast on top under where the rockers go.

Some of the early heads were also stamped near the thermostat housing in small letters, 12G938 (Morris 1100S head) or 12G1805 (Mk2S head).
The S ones of course had 35.6mm inlet valves and 2 extra stud holes.
Otherwise the same casting.

I bet it's a casting flaw, 948 head was never made.
<edit> even the MG Metro turbo head had a 12G940 cast on top.
