Whilst digging through some old special tuning stuff looking for something else I came across a comment in the FIA "Form of recognition" for the cooper s released by Leyland ST in the UK . It say's there was an acceptible "Alternative Heavy Duty Export suspension" , consisting of hydro displacers with part numbers C-21A.1819 and C-21A.1821 .

Not knowing much about hydro , did we get this version or was there another , stronger set of displacers availible somewhere else ?

With Renault, they sometimes specified uprated suspension for markets which had poor road conditions - more so African nations, middle eastern etc in their case.

Not sure with Leyland whether we would fall into that category or not to be honest. I wouldn't have thought so. But that is just my guess.

The clue here is the part number or actually the prefix on the part number. The "C" in front of the part number refers to "Competition" these were not heavy duty export items, that is just what they say on the FIA papers to get them homologated, these are special competition items.

I only have some 21A1814 and 21A2014 displacers. These are special competition items but they are not the "C" items.

OK , so a handful of cars in some unknown but tiny export market got special competition ones so they could say they used them in mainstream production ....

No. They would say that these parts were used in some foreign place but that would never ever actually happen. Stuart Turner will confirm this.

The cars that were disqualified from the 66 Monte Carlo rally used these displacers. In the "read and burn" letter between Stuart Turner and Issigonis they discuss these displacers and the letter says..
Quote:
Incidentally it would be just as well if they could be listed somewhere for some export market!

The rally was only weeks away and they still had not yet listed them as an export item!

You might be onto something Sports and I think it should be kept quiet! Maybe the headlights won't be the only excuse they needed.

Stuart Turner has been quoted as saying there were a number of things that they could have been 'pinged' on in 66, but the frogs missed 'em. Instead they chose the headlights, and consequently gave the Cooper S far more publicity than even winning the Monte could ever have!

Dem Frogs! :x We wus robbed
