I've got a Cooper S 2 piece harmonic balancer here that I would like to use, but from massive detonation in a previous life the keyway is a little flogged. My plan is to touch the keyway side up with a few cautious tacks of mig weld and then carefully file it back to original. However, it is 2 piece after all, so my question is: is the inner pulley the same as an 850 type pulley minus the outer ring? Or is it otherwise replaceable? |

The boys are a little late today, it's 12.30 and they haven't made it yet (I think we are over it all..) 
This subject is a little low key, (embedded software and hardware, the stuff which makes your microwave work) the semester was based on assignment work and so the weighting of this exam is only 30 percent overall. Of the remaining 70 percent I am walking into this exam with 69.5 
So while I wait for the study bods, I've had a bit of a play out in the garage... |

I wouldn't MIG it, brazing then filing would make a neater job IMO. I'm not sure what material the inner hub on an S balancer is, but the 1 piece balancers are cast iron... which can't really be MIG welded then filed. |

How about you cut a new Key way grove in another position ! This can be done with a hack saw and some neat Filing. |

I wouldnt hand cut it. This really needs to be a good machined fit to stop it fretting on the shaft, Simple solution - take it to your local engineering shop and get them to broach a new keyway in a different location Ive just done mine and it fits like a glove |

Is the Mk2 S the same as the Mini K 1100? They look the same. Mlk1 is the larger diameter one. |

No, the S one is raqther specific. It's thinner and larger by a fair margin. |

Yeah, Mk1 and Mk2 Cooper S pulley's are the same, the engine came with the same harmonic larger balancer throughout as far as I know.... I only know of one type fitted to the S engines, although the usual device fitted to the 850, 1 and 1.1 litre minis differed through the life of production in Oz from a simple pulley through to a more substantial yet different design to the S. I've got a normal one of these somewhere.... |

All Ss had the same one, but many have been changed over the years to the 1100/1275 one piece type. |

..and I'm considering using that single piece one too unless I get the keyway repaired or recut... I put the engine together and noticed some play in the keyway, but it bugged me just thinking about it. I figure it will only spend it's day working itself loose so I took it back off to revisit the problem....still, should be an easy proposition to have a machine shop recut the keyway in another location. |

Mick, if you want it to stay tight, I'd put some Loctite 262 inside the balancer and on the bolt thread. I also leave the flimsy so-called `lockwasher' off, on the 1 piece balancers. Never had one come loose since.
