I'm about to try for the first time to re-do all my valve settings.
My engine is a 998 and I've been reading my Scientific Publications Workshop Manual Series 64.
But there seems to be many settings for the valves. I just want ordinary driving settings.

They have listed:
0.019
0.012
0.015 (Cold)
and 0.021 for valve timing check.

What's the right one?

It depends what cam you have in your car. If it is the standard cam you can use the settings given in the workshop manual.

IF you are still running a standard cam then you would use 0.015" cold, if the motor is up to running temp then use 0.012".

I have no idea why they have listed 0.019" without the valve timing check? :? That is different to what my scientific publications book says :?

The reason the valve timing check is given is so that you can check the timing. When the rocker is adjusted off to 0.019" (in my book) you can turn the engine and the pointer on the clutch cover should line up with the 5° mark on the flywheel. I think there was something else to go along with that but I can't remember right now.

If you are just checking them, then you don't need to worry about that.

If you are not running a standard cam, you should get the correct gaps from the cam manufacturer.

My Book gives 0.012" clearance cold :?

Checking and adjusting rockers is easy - follow gafmo's explanation in the how to forum if you are worried.

I have always set standard rockers and cam set up to 12 thou hot or cold.

The figure of 19 thou is for checking the cam timing not adjusting the tappet clearance.

If you are doing it for the first time a easy rule to remember is the rule of nine.

For instance if rocker 1 is down or open you can adjust rocker 8 or if rocker three is down you can adjust rocker 6.

By the time you have done them this time, next time you will only to look at it to know which needs adjusting. You adjust the corresponding or opposite rocker to the one that is at full valve lift.

And remember you can do two rockers at a time and putting the car in fouth gear with the ignition off is an easy way to turn the motor.

Matt

one last tip with putting into 4th gear is to take the spark plugs out so your not pushing against the compression

Thanks for the info. Once again Ausmini pays off.
The tip for removing the sparkplugs is one of the most important I think. It really made a difference

1018 and Matt Van - It seems I can't read too good. It does say in the book 0.019 is for cam timing. But at least I know (after reading what you wrote) what that means now.

It was a pretty easy job, I only had to adjust a couple of them. The centre rocker assemblies seemed to be a tiny bit looser than the rest.

I've also attached some before/after pictures. Only because on another of my threads people have asked to see photos of the Injin. You can see the cork seal in the second photo was unable to be re-used. And the texta numbers on the rocker cover are the compressions.

WantOne, next time you adjust the rockers put some oil resistant gasket goo on both faces of the cork gasket (make sure both mating surfaces are clean). In the future when you pull the rocker cover gasket off the gasket goo should break, leaving the gasket itself in tact. It might take you a few goes of getting the rocker cover off without damaging the gasket but I've re-used the gasket on my rocker cover about 6 times now and not a single oil leak from it

Glad to hear that it went well for you.
