Hi all,

I am new so be kind...

Just got a new mini (well kinda old like me) and am doing some repair work - pulled the RAD out yesterday and noticed the timing cover...

Its a MK2 Coopers engine but the cover has a JF logo on it and the word TRIGER under that - the cover has a small opening (vent) at the bottom..

I am guessing that it has a timing belt but was wondering the origins and if any replacement parts are available..

i think it should have a timing chain if its original. and i know you can get replacments from mini part shops

Definitely not the original timing cover...

The vent is a give away to not being a chain I suspect..

Hope some others might know..

It's a Triger timing belt kit, I run one in my 1360, I think they are good, so does GR- but others may disagree.
They don't stretch like a chain so timing stays spot on.

Belts are available here from most Mini shops, but the originals were made in Italy by Pirelli, the only ones available here or from UK now are made in China.
Kevlar ones are available from www.minimania.com in USA. However they are US$100 each now. They say they are good for 50,000 miles.

I fitted a Chinese one 2 years ago- and it was so loose a fit, I sent it back. I was scared it would strip teeth. So, I got a Kevlar one from MM, it fits tight, just like the originals did.
Beware using UPS if ordering from Mini Mania, the freight will cost you as much as the belt...
They say now on their forum they will send via USPS, I would insist on it or NO SALE.

These kevlar belts are actually made for MiniMania by Gates in Japan, Karcraft tried a while ago to source them through Gates and apparently hit a dead end....

The Trigger timing belt kits were originated in Italy i believe,,, but yes you can get the replacement belts here in oz,,, just take it too your local bearing supply shop & they will be able to sort it for you

It is a after market belt drive kit made by Trigger (itialian i think), the original belts don't last that long but I believe that mini mania in the states has a kevlar belt that is the bees knees but pricey, Doc knows about them, I seem to rember about $100 but lasts about 4 times longer.

They are much quieter than a chain and give ,ore precise timing and the oil seals are in the base plate not the cover

When I first built my 1310 with one many years ago, nobody could tell me how long a (Pirelli Dayco) original belt lasts.
I had a Fiat 124S which used to need em changed at 50,000 miles. So, I pulled the Mini one at 40,000 miles. I still looks perfect, but I won't use it again..
A lot depends how gentle you are fitting the pulleys on and off. They are soft, any bruising on the teeth will destroy a belt real quick.

GR is mentioned in so many posts here I am curious...

GR is Graham Russell of Russell Engineering.

Considered by many people, especially in Sydney to be a bit of a Guru when it comes to tuning and building A Series Motors. He supplies lots of performance parts ie) pistons, cams etc.

Other people are sure to give you more information.
