Hi there,

I'm thinking about putting roof racks on my '66 mini (given that it doesn't have tons of space inside) and was wondering if anyone had some words of wisdom w.r.t. brands, type, possibility of damage etc. should I even bother? it would be mainly for carting my push bike around and possibly a surfboard or two.

you needn't worry about damage, they'll take a lot more weight than a bike/surfboards... anything that gutter mounts will do the job.

Just depends whether you want new or old, and what style, I made this one a couple of weeks ago. I had thought about simple bars, but wanted this style where I can carry camping gear etc.

Just keep an eye on where the legs clamp onto the gutter as it may start to rust out over the years.

Sorry for my bad English on this one, but you can use the cut inner wheels of a bike to protect from rust. If you've got the plastic trim on the gutter all around, those will probably get dented where the mountings come, and if you have a roof rack with "suckernobs" onto your roof, it might get damaged there as well, so I would get one without those.

yeah that was suggested to me recently, i picked up some racks that gutter mount like the photo above, and it was suggested to me to use a section of bike inner tube, just the cheapest one you can find does the job. stops paint damage, just keep an eye on moisture getting underneath the edges.

I'm pretty sure it's an off the shelf one, I've seen them advertised in japanese magazines. Looks just like the one in this photo - I've been searching all day for a website that sells them.....



certainly looks great - can I ask a silly question and enquire as to why you need a roof rack for the spare wheels when you could put them in the back of the ute?
