Now, I'm well aware that most in this forum are over the age of consent, adults, make their own decisions. Sadly, I'm twenty soon, and living back at home, so my parents still get to veto things. Right now, they want to veto the whole mini thing. They're anti-small-car of any persuasion. They like chevs. I do too, but I want a car that I can work on myself, and I really don't want to have to be paying to get parts from the US. I have always liked minis, and I don't think the desire to have one is going to go away. They seem afraid that I'm going to have a catastrophic accident, or be killed by a crazy soccer mum in a massive 4wd. Does anyone have any ideas whatsoever that would sway my parents opinions and allowe me to get the kind of car I'd like to, short of moving out which is not an option. Thanks everyone ![]() |

You have just as much chance of being seriously injured or killed in any small car.....regardless of whether it's a Mini, Laser, Corolla etc.... If I were you, I would pull out some stats on injuries and deaths in motor vehicles, motor bikes etc.....Prove that it doesn't matter what you drive.....deaths on the road are not Mini specific! I reckon you have more chance of being knocked down and killed by a 4X4 with a bull bar, than hurt or killed driving a Mini. |

Money is a good argument. Cheep to buy to buy, ecconomical to run, simple to maintain [do it yourself]. From the safety angle - it is very unlikely to suffer a fatality in ANY vehicle in built up metro areas these days, what with improvements to road conditions, lighting, stricter road rules and enforcement of such things as drink driving, P platers, red light cams and and speed cams. Any accident in an urban area is likely to be relatively low speed and therefore low impact. It may cause significant material damage to the car and physical pain to you but rarely will it take life. The mini is not known for it's long haul interstate travel comforts so tends to be an "Around Towner". So you just tell 'em that you'll have best of both worlds, when it comes to that trip to Melbourne, you'll go in Dad's Chev, but 'round town the Mini is just fine. Cheers Dat Cheers Dat |

minis are very safe cars the wheelbase alone makes them very stable, the are relativly strong. they are probably one of ther most forgiving cars to driver error, and the superb handling is a bonus to avoiding messy situations. also not many cars will hold their value as well as the mini... ..and then theres clingwrap...LOL |

erin, I had the same problem. Just bring a mini home and park it next to the chev. "look at all the SPACE we STILL have , Dad!!!!" If that doesnt have any affect, take your STANDARD mini to the hills and go thru a few corners with the chev behind you. You may need to stop and wait a couple times. And remind them that Chev interiors are far more dangerous than mini's. ![]() |

My mother was against me buying a mini. I asked her to drive me to a mini show and seeing all the worked mini's, she allowed me to get one then it turned into two. You know the story, once you've got one you get so addicted. |

Hehe same problem here, and im 21. So what i did is, asked my dad if we had room for me to put one. and he went boonta saying i couldnt get one, i already have a car that goes fine, i shouldnt be spending money on it blah blah... so i went and bought one, and told him i was bringing it home. now i dont know about you, but im paying my mum and dad board money of 150 a week. so my argument is, that i pay an equal share to live in that house, so basically i have an equal right to have a car. im the one who goes to work for 40 hours for my $$, so im spending it on what the hell i want to. it is hard to get to that defying the parents stage, im only just getting there myself. but now i have it, my dad has just spent the past 2 days working on the engine with my bf,while i have been at work, and got it going. they will come around, trust me ![]() Danielle |
