Post subject:  Changing wiper mount blocks

Is it difficult to get the wipers off a roundie so I change the angled plastic mount blocks? I figure I have to get the spring off the back of the wiper but do I need a special tool to undo the 8 sided nut or just use a shifter? Should I put some silicon on the new blocks to stop water getting in? May be dumb questions but I am learning as I go. Cheers.

you don't need to get the spring off the wiper, all you need to do is put a flat bladed screwdriver between the tab at the bottom of the spring and the shaft and twist it - takes a bit of a knack, but not hard

shifter to get the nut off

are they Dr Mini ST blocks?

Thanks Simon K (hope to see you next Sunday). I got the blocks from Toby at Mini Spares and Repairs. Not sure where he got them from. Do any of them have problems? Also, do I need to seal them with silicon?

don't worry... you will ;)

silicone might be a good idea, I've never replaced the blocks so mine are old and crusty anyway

Don`t use silicon on car bodies,,, it makes rust

Thanks SimonK and TheMiniman, it pays to ask questions on here. I was going to try and stop the water that fills in the dip from going into the engine bay. Maybe it is meant to. The early MkI no dip seemed to be a better design. Must have been a good reason for the change.

I am now machining these from black HDPE plastic, $20/pr if anybody needs some. No silastic needed, they seal better than originals.
Suit LATER type only. Early type you can go get UK ones.
