Post subject:  Degreasing parts
When I told my old man that I was going to degrease the subframe I just pulled outta SC850, he said "throw it in the trailer and take it to "Car Lovers"

(Car Lovers is one of those car wash places with high pressure guns and foam brush, etc.)

Am I actually allowed to do this???

I know I've seen either degreaser, or engine cleaner, or something like that on tap at Car Lovers.... but I dont know how strong the mixture is.

But I dunno.... rocking up to one of those places to clean a subframe?? I dont suppose someone else here has tried this?? :?

Yea, when i did the rebuild on the current engine in the Mini, I took all tha parts down to the "Aqua-jet" car wash in crates....
Layed them all out on the concrete and cleaned away !!

Excellent way of doing it....

Then again, it was the middle of the night, so not sure able "Allowed" ..... :oops:

I dont think a car wash places degreaser would be string enough to get all the crud off a subframe... You could buy some degreaser and paint it on, then wash it off with a hose.....

That way, would probably work out to be cheaper as you wouldnt use a whole bottle of degreaser and you could use it later.... PLus isnt it like $2 a minute at car lovers?

easy - pre-coat it in the heavy duty stuff before you go. then roll down and just start using their stuff, and you'll be set. anyone watching will be amazed at how good the car wash degreaser is!

there degreaser is crap .....
i took a prime mover to one once and there degreaser was usless
so i pulled the can out of the panier and started spraying the guy went nuts .......
i picked up the gun and started cleaning the degreaser of and he right off
screaming and carrying on like a bitch i finnished cleaning the truck and left :)

Guys,

I found that degreasing a subframe with degreaser, paintbrush and hose was a labourious job. You need pressured water and probably a raincoat!
The last one I took to the engine rebuilder who put it in one of his cleaning baths. This took off the paint too.

Nathan, Nigel and I took Ribena's subframe down to a carlovers and blasted the crap out of it. Took about 3 dollars to get nice and clean, but the pressure still wasnt that great to blast the 30 year old baked on grime up inside the towers where the old hydro bags were.

No-one came out so we were laughing.
Backed the minda van in a little bit so it looked like we were cleaning that :wink:

Another way to get the crud off, once it's stripped- hit it with a blowlamp. :P Burns all the crud off nice!
Hey we (was at NSWGR) used to do steam locos that way... U ain't seen crap till you've seen one of those after a few years on the tracks!! 8)

My bro in law has a car wash at Ballina - it's one of the independant ones -not car lovers as there stuff is sh*t. The B-I-L says they have a HOT water degreaser that goes on thick - let it sit a bit then blast it off - strips all the gunk He has several of the garages and a motor bike place bring engines and parts down and they go away all spik. So find yourself and independent and it's probably the same stuff

A valid argument for using these facilities would be...

Anyone in this business offering degreaser, or engine cleaner is inviting their customers to clean the greasy parts of automotives. Attached or separated from the original vehicle should have little bearling on the matter.

My only reason for asking this question is that I dont want the degreaser to kill the lawn at home - the owners will kill me. :wink:

Yeah, I think soaking it in degreaser when its in the trailer sounds like the right move. Then just whip it up to CarLovers and high pressure it all off.

hey Nath, I took my front and rear subframes to my local Car Lovers type wash bay place thinggy.....

It wa the middle of the day on the weekend...people everywhere...I drove in, opened up the wagon, plonked them both on the ground, donned the overalls and sprayed away! No one said anything, even the guys running the place :D

It took 2 attempts to get the 30 odd years of crud off, but was well worth it.

Like they say at Nike..... JUST DO IT! :wink:

Car washes have to have grease traps and oil removers before the water goes into the drain so you won't be causeing any problems

Yeah I'll go down soon..... but I might wait till some big cruise is on.... and i'll take my time cleaning it. Nothing better than pissing off a heap of Lancer drivers :wink:
