Post subject:  Wiper motor blowing fuses
Hi all,

the 2nd hand wiper motor I bought quickly blows the main 20A fuse when used. What's going on here? Can I open it up and recondition it somehow?

does it blow the fuse as soon as you flick the switch, or does it blow the fuse after 1 or 2 wipes?

After 1 or two wipes, not yet connected to the wiper cable.

If it's got no load on it then something is desperately wrong...

You can open it up by taking the top plate off and after removing the gibbons within, and see if it has been running sludged up by debris or damage. If it all turns freely, but still blows fuses then it has a short somewhere that needs to be repaired. If this is within the windings of the motor, then it is most likely a throw away, rewinding will cost more than a replacement wiper motor is worth.

Yes, but the wiper motor still shouldn't be consuming 20+ amps on it's own without the wiper blades connected.

I greased up the gearbox and linkages and it works without blowing the fuse now... Makes a scraping noise though.

Ran out of time this morning, but it was trying to turn the wipers downwards below the scuttle panel. Do I just have to get the gear rotated another half revolution and that fixes it? Motor looks identical to the one I pulled off.

Pull the arms off, let it park and then refit the arms.
It's a good idea to pull it all out, strip, clean and grease the rack and wheelboxes.
Before you start, mark the top of the spindles, and rotate the wheels 1/2 a turn when refitting (so marks are at bottom). It is then running on unworn teeth.

Hm it's not parking... it only works at one position of the switch where it continuously turns. Just realized I haven't connected the ground wire to the casing yet though.

I am assuming the wiper motor is a round body type, If You are sure that The wiper motor you have fitted is out of an mini, Ignore The first part of this, (1 )check that the markings in the metal dics connected to the nylon drive wheel are the same as the one you removed, It is possible the wiper motor is out of another type of car, ( 2) if after connecting the earth wire it still does not park then check the park plate at the rear of the nylon drive wheel.
