Post subject:  Nylon Unis

I have found a couple of the plastic type drive couplings that need new uni joints in them. I did a search and found a couple of people said the uni was a Triumph TR6 one, has anyone successfully put new unis in these ? and are they all definately TR6 ones ? dont suppose anyone has the part no. for em ?

I've never replaced them but yes they are definitely a TR6 uni inside.

Plastic unis are much much better than the rubber donuts. Last for years. :D
Yes I am interested in knowing what type of steel uni is inside as I have a spare set with worn out steel unis.

There were also some made with steel cones not nylon, I've not seen them for years.

p/no for the nylon ones complete was QL5000 I think, but are NLA now.
Best just fit TR6 unis, don't break the nylon cones getting em off...

<edit> Just spoke to Karcraft, they say the TR6 ones are a GUJ102.
Same as used on Austin 1800.

There are actually a few different nylon unis. The QL5000 was made in the UK by Quinton Hazel and they have white nylon cups but there was also a local version made by Hardy Spicer and sold through Repco, these ones have black nylon cups.
The Repco ones were also sold by Leyland Australia.

Here are a couple that I have picked up on ebay in recent times, one came in Leyland packaging and the other came in Repco packaging...

Just a little bit of advise, If you are fitting this type of uni it is most important that the couplings on either side of the uni are in good condition, these can spread a liitle if they have previously been fitted with rubber unis that have worn badly, make sure that each part of the uni fits neatly in the couplings before fitting. :D

Maybe somebody could arrange to mould some more of these nylon cups up and fit em to TR6 unis, for the benefit of the ausmini populace...

look like they'd be relatively easy to machine on a lathe ?

They would, except the nylon ones have flats moulded on so they don't turn in the yokes...
I guess you could maybe turn and mill or file them, but moulding is the way to go with big numbers.
