Post subject:  Bulk Oil Buy

Not sure if this is in the right section, but I want to know if anyone here buys their oil in bulk (205 L drums) and if so how much do they pay?
I live in melbourne so I guess I would want someone local. But I'm open to hear about what other people here pay.
I have called a mechanic I know and I was told that it would be $1060 which is $5.1708 per L, so he is trying to rip me off as I was expecting is to be $2 - $3 p L
And if your wondering I just don't like going down to the shops every 2500 Klms. i'd rather just have one drum sitting in the corner of my garage.

I used to buy mine in 20l drums - didn't actually work out any cheaper, but easier for sure. The handiest thing was that when I emptied a 20l, I put my old oil into it, then I'd take the drum to the oil dump place at the tip.

205l of oil will last you 41 oil changes - now I change my oil every 1000 miles, and I do a lot of driving, so I change my oil about every 5 weeks. That drum of oil would last me just over 4 years!

I spoke to a mate who is a mechanic, and he reckons a 44 gallon drum (fuchs) is somewhere around $900, but it has gone up recently. The other issue is your shelf life, realistically, once a drum is open, it needs to be used up in a couple of months

A bulk buy of oil filters is a handy thing but like Simon said the shelf life of the oil is the problem. Just buy half a dozen 5L or 6L bottles at a time.

When I had mini's as dailies I used to just buy the 20 litre drums like Simon . I have a hand pump and a few old glass Castrol oil bottles (now cleaned out and sealed for rum in the garage , everyone that sees them think's it's oil  ) so it was nice and easy to decant as much as was needed and also keep some on standby for topping up as required .

I go buy 3 or 4 KMX 6L bottles from KMart, whenever it's on special..
Oil filters- I brave the wild men of of Canley Vale to buy 12x Cooper spin-on filters at a time from Mekong Spares.

I was buying HPR30 in 20 litre drums from Supercrap when it was on special.
Then they stopped carrying the 20 litre drums.
So now I buy KMX in 6 litre bottles from Kmart when it is on special. (Like Doc I get a few at a time!)

The bad side of the 20 litre drum is getting the last litre out. :x

Just cut the lid out, then the drum is useful for storing Mini or motorbike parts until they are old rusty and useless. :P
I know this because my dad hoarded Douglas motorbike parts for 40+ years...

i think a mechanic would be the best bet..

I used to buy 10L bottles of valvoline from supercrap which was good value, some shops have drums or 10L bottles and some dont.

2500kms? i thought the service interval was 5000km or 3000mi

Oil is the cheapest insurance you can buy for a Mini motor. other cars don't have a gearbox that thrashes the engine oil.
I use 1500 miles/2500km, back in the 60s when oil was cheap we did it every 1000 miles.
I do the spin-on filter every 3000 miles.

Since starting this I have done a bit of looking around. It seems to be a lot cheaper to try getting the 20 or 6 L drums/bottles when they go on special. Also there is also the possible contamination issues that may happen with a 44gal drum to take into account.
I guess I should just keep a lookout when there is the sales on at supercheap/ Kmart/ bigW etc..
Oh yeah, and I think that oil is the cheapest insurance that I can get for my engine so I just change it regularly as mine are daily’s.

buying direct from the manufacturer (in my case shell) the cheapest way is a 20 litre .
it is exactly the same price per litre as for buying a 205 drum but no delivery charge.
expect to pay around $4 a litre.
