Hi All
Saw something the other day about speed cameras and one guy was saying that his speed according to his GPS was........
I have no idea, do they really do that?
Any one know of a gizmo like that which will actaully give the correct speed you are doing? No a speedo is not an answer that is acceptable.
Any recommendations of model and price?

Yep, they really do that. I have a TomTom One (one of the early ones) and it does that. I would be surprised if newer models didn't do that. Mine you can set it to mph or kph.

I had a mate who broke a speedo cable on his Lada niva and couldn't be bothered fixing it so he just bought a GPS. Used it for a few years too.

Pretty much all of the GPS can be set to display speed - how legible is another matter. Normally it is a small readout in the equivalent of the task bar. Useful, but too small to see at a quick glance I would think.

I also have two Tom Tom one's (mine & wife's). I haven't tried real hard, but I don't think on mine it can be displayed any bigger.

Thanks Guys
I might borrow one, just want to check my speedo as I have had a 3.1 diff fitted.
My speedo (kph Moke) was recalibrated to suit the mini K and was perfect, but the new diff changes it all of course.

My Tom Tom One tells you the speed and chirps if you go a few k's over the limit. It's pretty amazing how it knows all the different speed zones.

What I'm curious about is those people who have contested speeding fines by saying that their GPS said they weren't going as fast as the speed camera claimed they were.

How do you use your GPS to prove you weren't speeding?

This was a case of a particular set of cameras at the Wellington Road underpass on the new Eastlink Tollway.
Many folk seem to have driven the whole tollway and only been pinged at the one set of cameras. It has caused a bit of a stir. Did not seem to matter, people using Cruise control, speedo alarms and GPS were all speeding, because the cameras are foolproof!!!!!

All GPS can do it, my iPhone can do it!

A cycle computer can do it for $20

I always slow down well below the speed limit at any camera for that fact!

There was a guy either earlier this year or last year that had ones of those satelite tracking systems installed used for vehicle recovery after theft, after he was done for speeding which he claimed he was not speeding and took the matter to court, he got the print out from the monitoring mob the system was through which had full date/time positioning and speeds....proved that he was not speeding at the time and place the cop booked him on.....

A friend of mine has a little gadget like this:

http://www.autoweb.com.au/cms/A_1695/ti ... ticle.html

Its an awesomely simple little device that is easy to read and use, basically, the one Ive seen has a gps based speed readout, tells you where red light cameras are and what direction you are travelling in (N, E, S, W, NW etc) just an LED based thing, its brilliant, and cheaper than a gps.... far as I know you can get them at supercheap for around $50

pretty sure the guy that fought the fines was the owner/director of the company that made the tracking system so not sure how valid the argument would be

The vehicle certification engineers in NZ use them for speed testing (decelerating from 100kph to test brakes) so they must be pretty accurate.

There's also an app for the iphone which uses GPS and its internal accelerometer to tell you how much power your car is putting to the ground. Apparently it's pretty accurate and only US$15.

They'd be using a VBOX from racelogic (www.racelogic.co.uk) - they have a faster GPS 'engine' than most navigation ones.

My navigator is the optional MINI branded Garmin Nuvi 360 and I have checked the speedo function vs the VBOX (which is calibrated) and it's within 1km/hr at a steady speed. There is a lag when accelerating/decelerating though. I use it over the giant clock in the BINI all the time when I have it in the car.

According to my TomTom, the LS's speedo is 10klms fast..ie: 110 on speedo is actually 100.

The NXR's speedo is near enough to spot on.

The only issue with GPS is the time lag or times when it can't acquire a signal.

The time lag is tiny only half a second or so for mine.

I used Tomtom in my car as my speedo has been reading wrong since i got it. Once i realised that when i was doing 60kmh, the (UK) speedo was reading 30mph, i don't use the tomtom anymore as i now automatically double it in my head all the time.

The only times it struggles to get signal is in the city with lots of high-rise buildings so speed is not so much of an issue there.

Lets face it they have to be accurate or else they wouldn't be able to calculate your position accurately enough to make turns at the right time and so on...
