there is no 30 year rule and has not been for quite a number of years,its a standard rule of 72 for no duty, you can check on the customs site if you like but I have done it for a living for the last 10 years or so and he will be charged duty on a 74 car
If this is the case the rule has changed in the last two years. I imported a 75 Corona in Oct 2006 and customs attempted to charge me duty and GST. I pointed out to the freight forwarder that I did not need to pay duty and was issued an adjustment invoice. I still have the paperwork.
Also on p6 of this doccument:
http://www.customs.gov.au/webdata/resou ... vOwnMV.pdf
... it says:
Passenger vehicles of an age 30 years or more (vehicles 30 years old or more are subject to GST only)
Customs Duty = None
GST = 10%
LCT: May apply
If it has changed, the website is not up to date. I cannot find anything about a 72 rule?
Cheers,
