Well ive finally started to work on my mini now that i have finished uni and working full time. Tonight i started to lift the body of the subframe and engine. Im almost there im just stuck on the one of the bolts holding the steering rack to the car. Ive undone it and its out of the hole its just stuck on something else. But yeh i will post some pics tomorrow when my camera charges. |

Well i got the engine and the subframe out from the body. Im going to remove the engine but i had a question. Whats the best way to remove the driveshafts. Should i remove them from the wheel end or is there a way to remove the shafts from the back of the engine without removing any of the wheels etc.? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Vut yeh so thats what ive done.[/img] |

you will need to remove the wheels, so you can get at the ball joint, you need to undo that and i think something else, so you can get the driveshafts out. use a proper ball joint splitter someone on here will be able to tell you everything you need to do ![]() |

Nope, that's it. Split the top ball joint and splay the hub assemblies out, and the drive shaft withdraws from the pot joint far enough to lift the engine out. Been doing it that way for yeaaaars ![]() |

If all you want to do is remove the engine, no.. you don't need to undo the draft shaft nut - just split the top ball joint and splay the hubs out. If you want to remove the drive shafts as well, you do. |

Ive started pulling things apart and getting ready to clean them up and paint them and i was wondering, do i need an engine enamel for the subframe and engine bay or do i just use and normal paint? Im wanting to do just the subframe and bay for now so im doing it with spray packs. Thanks Blake |

If the drive shafts have inboard CV's there is no need to split ball joints as it is very easy to remove the motor. With the mounts unbolted just lift the motor up away from the subframe a little then rock it towards the radiator side and the drivers side drive shaft is easily released from the inboard CV (provided you have released the CV boot off the CV). It is then just a matter of releasing the off side drive shaft and presto, the motor is out. Don't believe me, then try it, 5 minute job even with the subframe still in the car. |
