Ok guys, I've been following Matt68's thread, the delux won't rev, with earnest. As I said in that thread, my clubman has the exact same problem. In 3rd, it won't rev over about 65-70, in 4th it won't rev over about 85. Makes freeway driving a BIG issue. Up to that high in the rev range it purrs like a kitten. What had happened is that I put a new exhaust on the car, well a 2nd hand one my dad made me for my LS years ago using a standard mini exhaust manifold, then progressing into a larger pipe with a big muffler on the back with twin pipes out the middle just below the rear number plate. It used to run fine on my LS, and it ran fine on my clubman for about a week. Anyhow, I checked that it was all connected properly, no leaks etc, that was all ok so thought engine! Had a look, the plugs and leads had seen much better days, so down to autobarn and bought a new set. It seemed to run a bit smoother then but still won't rev up higher. Points look ok, oil and coolant levels are good, isn't using any at all, so now I'm a little stumped! Asked a mechanic who suggest that the choke may be sticking, pulled the carby to bits, found no issues, and as I said, she stills runs like a dream and just as smooth and with just as much power as always. And doesn't blow any smoke as per normal. Its a stock standard 1100cc with single 1.25inch SU. Can any of you guys offer me any suggestions as to what to look at next? I mentioned the exhaust as it only started a week after the exhaust was fitted. Any suggestions from anyone is greatly appreciated. THanks heaps guys and girls and Merry Xmas!

check that the exhaust is not blocked up as to much back pressure will sstop them from reving, if the exhaust was sitting around for a while wasps or the like may have built a nest in it where you can't see

How long was the exhaust sitting and not in use , it's possible some rust has flaked off inside the pipe and partially plugged the muffler like Jon is suggesting with the mud wasps .

My money is on your car leaning out up top. A quick check would be to pull your choke out when it starts acting up and see if that helps.

I put small bore LCB extractors and 1 3/4" OD exhaust on NAV and this same thing happened to me.
My tuner forgot to put in the new needle :oops: after rebuilding my carby and thay re tuned it on the ground checking the points gap and timing etc, and it ran like a dream. It revved out to 6k easy and had the smoothest idle it'd had since I owned it. :D
Once I drove down the road it was a struggle to get to 100km/h and it started to overheat (new rad&water pump&hoses) and had never done that before. :evil: I turned around and went back to the tuner and they diagnosed it after checking everything else by putting their O2 sniffer into the exhaust and taking NAV for a blast up the road.

I suggest finding someone with a portable exhaust sniffer and getting them to come for a quick run up the street with you. Or goin to a rolling road dyno that has SU carby experience

Maybe some one stuck a 2.9 or 2.7 crown wheel & pinion set in there while you weren`t looking & it`s just waaaaaay tooooo tall geared

My money is on the exhaust too. Old exhausts are bad news. The baffling gets rusty, and will completely restrict your exhaust and will make it behave exactly as you say.

Otherwise, Mixture checking is a good idea :wink:

a standard mini should rev to about 5500rpms

i'd be pretty happy with getting 8500rpms in 4th gear!! at that speed no wonder you are having difficulty on the freeway! slow down maybe.

Check the distributor is advancing properly...

Ollie had a similar problem when I brought him back from Geelong...couldn't get over 55mph (85kph) all the way home....the vacuum advance was fine, but it took the local shell garage (Kmart mechanic who was highly recommended) to discover the mechanical advance wasn't working...

Well I took the exhaust off, put the original (and quite new) exhaust back on that was working perfectly and the car is exactly the same... Still coughs and splutters at 80kms just does it more quietly now :lol:
Anyhow I guess next guess would be distributor timing or fuel.

Check dashpot oil too.
When checking the timing remove vaccum advance hose/pipe but im sure that you know that. :wink:
