Yep Clean and set points and also check rotor Buttom and also clean points on the dizzy cap...or... Great idea to replace and know they are out of the question and start again. If she doesn't start at least you have spent $30 and its not them

Hey all So i finally finished replacing all the gaskets for the top end of my betty, which might i say is a 67 deluxe that sat in a garage for the last 10 years. Unfortunately now she wont start. She turns over fine but wont kick in. After some time she just goes straight into a whining sound from which i think is coming from the starter motor. I have tried to run the battery straight from my car to the back end of Betty as a jumper with no luck. I have checked the fuel lines and am getting fuel to the carby (all stock) and either way i didnt touch the carby, I have used "start you bast%rd" with no luck. As most of her is original i suppose it could be anything yet right before the top end strip down she was running . Any suggestions would be great. Thanks D |

Pull a sparkplug out, sit it on the head & put the wire back on it. Crank it over and watch. If no spark I'd start by cleaning the points. If plugs are all wet due to no spark, put some others in- even old ones will do. |

retrace your steps from when it was last running...what have you fiddled with  Pull the plugs and clean them..check the points and the plug leads for good location..kick it in the guts and see what happens

I presume you have new fuel ? I've had my Elf off the road most of the year and refused to start - went through the whole chase down the electrical system then I primed the float bowl with new fuel started almost immediately - .. and it's only been sitting a few months..... |

Even the vintage motorcycle club is having the same concerns when there bikes sit around for too long. |

Fuel Eh????? Interesting point. I hadnt thought of that. Fuel is only a few months old but i guess that still could be a bit old. Either way i thought by putting ether down its throat it would be enough to at least get some life out of it. Priming the float bowl?? How do you do that? The electrical issues i was going to resolve by buying all new stuff. No thoughts on the starter motor? Because it whines after a few attempts and then i suppose it needs to cool down and will allow me to try to start it again. By the way Betty is called Betty from some mothers do av em. [/quote] |

Just undo the screws holding the cover on, carefuly lift the cover up, then squirt some fuel in...tighten cover back down. Kick it in the guts. |

So its not good enough that its getting prior to the bowl? I took the line off the bowl and its getting fuel there. |

Nope - I too had plenty of fuel - but just wouldn't start it.... I emptied out the bowl (soaked up with rags - it's not that much really) and manually filled with fresh fuel as Mick described... Once started - the fuel in the tank was OK - just that initial "fire up".... |

what about if your leads arnt on correctly? not in the right sequence could this cause this??? something simple but maybe? |
