Anti-clockwise on the distributor starting from the one at about 2 o'clock
1-3-4-2

1 being the end closest to the radiator

 get a manual :)

When you say go into the cap I assume you mean a side entry cap (probably a 25D dizzy).

When looking down at the cap the two leads that are grouped on the right hand side (when facing the car), the one closest to the engine goes to number 1, the one on the outside goes to number 2.

On the otherside (left) the lead closest to the engine goes to number 3 and the one closest to the grill goes to number 4.

And buy a manual. I have 3 with access to a 4th if I want it. I love my manuals and find them very useful.

by the by Nickipoo, I must say thank you for the Haynes one, came in very handy on the weekend (much easier to use than the black Leyland workshop manual imo - even has diagrams for the less than engine-familiar like me! )

And if you're too tight to buy one at least download one from the net. But Christmas is coming up so ask your mum/dad/girlfriend/boyfriend/sister/brother etc to get you one
