it's possible to get a new one that is dead... if the old one was working, put it back on, if it wasn't working, then find one that you KNOW does work put everything back exactly how it was, make sure the car starts, then return the faulty coil - unless you find the problem elsewhere with a loose fitting/missing step/etc. which is often the case |

it worked yesterday but while it was jumping across the negative i would push the lead down and loose power and i would also get a small charge at the back of the carby while trying to tune it. ??? |

what would be the standard resistance you would expect from a 12v?? |

I had something like that with my Rover, turned out it was a short on one of the wires running off the coil that had rubbed all the sheathing off. Took me a while to find. Stoopid Lucas.

a 12V coil is about 3 ohm. eg Bosch SU12 or GT40. a coil that uses a ballast resistor (or the pink resistor wire on UK Minis) is about 1.5 ohm. eg Bosch GT40-R. |

GRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!! what's that got to do with 'Stoopid Lucas' ???? stupid owner, stupid previous owner - stupid whoever neglected to put the wire in it's proper place to stop it from rubbing on something - Lucas didn't fail to maintain the car I hate it when people bash Lucas electrics - I wish I could build an electrical system that survives 40+ years of neglect, shoddy modifications and ham fisted owners sorry - raw nerve |
