Post subject:  disc brakes

I know I read on here ages ago about this but can't for the life of me find the thread. It could be coz I am on dial up and it takes 5 minutes to load a page!

I am rebuilding the front subframe and have all the bits back together. My discs have been sitting for about 5 months and have nice coating of rust on them. I also managed to get a bit of grease on them when removing them. Its amazing I didn't get more as I ended up coated in the stuff.

I am wondering if I should get them machined to get the surface rust off and clean them up a tad. I am also thinking about just buying some slotted and cross drilled discs. as these look great and any additional upgrades to my mini's braking can't be a bad thing

They are 8.4 by the way.

no need to skim them, your just wasting material on your disks unless they are warped, have pitts and grooves and so on in them. If they are nice and smooth Give then a run over with a wire brush, and a good wipe down with brake cleaner when your done before fitting them.

slotted & cross drilled are just bling, unless you're good with your right hand, don't bother

if the rotors are pitted & gross, then machine them, otherwise the first time you put your foot on the brake they'll clean up - but machining is a must if you're putting in new pads
