I think the item you are thinking of is called a ezy out.

Screw extractor and easy out are the same thing.
Be carefull, they are usually rubbish. You may do a better job without them.

Depending on where the bolt is....you may be able to centre punch (using a very sharp point), dead centre as a guide for a a sharp drill bit....just big enough to leave the threads behind....then pick them out with a suitable tool (a scriber is usually good).

Forget ezy-outs- if stud is broken off flush because it's jammed or rusted, you have a 50/50 chance of breaking the ezy-out in there, and they are hardened so you just made the job a lot `harder' (pun intended).

On bolts or studs that are flush, I drill them on centre to the tapping drill size and screw the right size tap in. When you undo the tap it winds the remains of the stud out.
Pretty easy job on Minis as everything is cast iron, outboard motors (alloy and S/S bolts) are trickier, that's where I learned to do it properly.

Yup, i snapped a manifold bolt in the Cylinder head of my old Crummodore. Drilled it out and stuck and easy out into it, then snapped the easy out off flush inside the bolt... Had to drill the ezy out out, then drill the bolt out...

Once again dependent where it is you can cut a slot in it with a 1mm grinding disk and use a screw driver to get it out
