Post subject:  help with my cooper s engine build

i need some help
i have 2 flywheel housings for my cooper s donk
they are both slightly different . Does anyone know what part number or types should be on a 9f-say engine.

also i have two gear shift remotes (one has a grease nipple in the centre and the other doesn't ) also one has a straight gearstick and the other has a slight kink at the bottom. which one should i refurb?

The straight stick is Mk1 the other is Mk2.

The straight stick should be chrome, the bent stick should be black. (I think! 8) )

MK1 stick is skinny & chrome
MK2 stick is fat & black


what is the difference between the two flywheel housings?

from memory, there is a difference in the area around the rear main seal on the inside, one has a ridge where the other one doesn't - one is early and one is late - or something :?

I would find it hard to describe how to tell the difference in the clutch housings, however if you post some pics showing the engine side of the clutch housing, And a side view of the housing where the starter motor is mounted I will be able to tell you which one to use if any, Also the clutch housing cover plate the one that is the one that has the clutch arm in it, is different on some models, What year model Mk1 are you building The majority of Mk1 Cooper S Had the straight Chrome gear stick The bent black gear stick was first used on the 1969 model Mk1

Thought I would take some pics of my 9FSAY engine in case that helps at all. This is the original engine in my 68/69 S. I can't guarantee someone hasn't changed the cover but I doubt they would. Cheers.

What size idler gear bearings do you have? The later MK1 cars use the larger size idler gear bearings as per the 4 synchro boxes. IIRC the early cars used 1" O/D bearings with the equal length idler gear shaft. Later MK1 cars used the 1 1/16" O/D bearings with the unequal length idler gear shaft. Housings for each are different externally.
The 1 1/16" bearings go with the 22A1288 commonised 3 synchro gear box case.
Flute's pic shows the later type. It has a depressed section around the middle of the flywheel housing. This should have 1 1/16" O/D idler bearings.
Around this time they also came with the boss for the breather for non S 1275 blocks.
IIRC my 66 S didn't have the depression. It was just flat and had the 1"O/D bearings. (Well it was 40 + years ago)
The MK1 stick is thin and chromed and didn't have the grease nipple under the centre front of the remote housing. A MK2 remote housing I have has the grease nipple. I modified my MK1 remote by adding the grease nipple at the front and also added a grease nipple to the cap on the anti-rattle plunger and drilled a small hole through the brass plunger.

Mine may be the later type but it is a three synchro box. I have the chrome stick too.

My late 68 build MK1 S has the flywheel housing with the breather boss (undrilled of course) and the 3 synchro box using the 22A1288 casing.
Looking at your pic is your starter solenoid mounted correctly? I've had mine off several times and I've allways had it with the terminals at the top.
Not being critical, just curious, as I can't remember how it was originally.

From what I can see in the photo I would guess the clutch housing to be around 1967 and the cover to be 1968 69
