I have heard omomatic works well... Although I havent tried it. Just make sure the powder is all dissolved in water before you put it in.... |

I've bought molases for my motor rebuild and was going to use it on the block/head, and got an idea to do the radiator, asked the old man what he thought, and he wern't sure. I think if it is watered down more to be more viscous it would work well, just requires a longer time of sitting. Has anyone tried it? |

I wouldn't put molasses in the cooling system, except the block & head. It eats aluminium- eg your water pump and thermostat housing. I doubt it will do much good in the radiator, being brass and copper. Best way to clean the radiator properly is take it to a radiator shop. They will unsolder the tanks, rod the cores out, acid dip it, solder tanks back on and test it. Pouring stuff into it won't unblock blocked cores.. it'll just clean the least obstructed ones. A nice clean 3 core 16 fin/inch Oz radiator is the equal of a new UK super 2 core... and is heaps cheaper, after you pay for the cleanout.

I should have added to my post - run the omo through the cooling system first. This will get the crud out of the block better than anything short of hot dipping. Then take the rad out and get it prof cleaned - keep it topped up with anti freeze or corrosion inhibiotor and you won't have any probs in the future... |

Omo has pretty strong Alkali's in it so really it is almost hot dipping. Another product that would probably work well would be drain cleaner (Caustic Soda). It is what most commercial radiator products are anyway but it's much cheaper. Note these do react with aluminum as well, that is why the instructions give you time limits for using them. It shouldn't need to be said but, if you try the above methods you do so at your own risk. |
