Have a look at the pic below. The alternator is marked 15AC and the other numbers are 24 and 78.

Is there any chance that this is an internally regulated 15ACR unit or am I right in assuming that this alternator will need an external regulator?

Yep, internal regulator. The clue is where the hole for the two pin plug has only one pin. (I hope I am right! )

I was just guessing based on what Bosch did when fitted to Holdens. I figured that the Lucas Australia alternators were also fitted to Holdens and would have used the same types of plugs.

I'm confused

I have 2 types of 15AC alternators, the one shown in this thread and another with a plastic cover on the non drive end. This cover apparently covers several bits including a regulator.
So is one of these 2 types I have the external type of regulator unit :?:
I thought the external regulator units had the regulator on the inner guard but if the type pictured and the other one I have described have the reg on or in the alternator then which one is an external :?:

Cheers
Steve

Not sure but morris has said the conection might tell the tale, I know that these alternators were fitted to Ford Escorts and some triumph sedans and in that case they did have external regs either the 4 or 8 TR same as the Mini with the 12 AC

I was always led to believe that the self regulating lucas units were called ACR but you live and learn

There are 2 different `15AC' alternators, this one and the early one with a 1/2 plastic end cover (as used on Mini-K and Cooper S).
That one is NOT internally regulated, what you can see inside there is the rectifier stack.

The later Clubby one with a full plastic end cover, <edit> the 16ACR, is internally regulated.

[edit] these line up with what John said above.
