Post subject:  steering rack

just wanted to know how many people have eve rebuilt there steering rack, as im just about to put mine back in, in my 78 clubby.
only reason is because i was going to put some new tie rod ends on and boots.
i took the old boots off and oil came out, should i flush the oil out and put some new oil in, or should i dismantle the hole thing and clean it out properly

thanks guys

If there was no slack in the steering before, you could just add new oil and put it back in.
But if it was mine, and already off the car, I would strip it and overhaul it.
If it's an original Oz made rack, the things that go are the 2 conical Belleville washers that hold the rack against the pinion (they break with old age), and the felt bush in the LH side of rack (these can now be replaced with a Nolathane bush).
You will need a new oil seal, and maybe pinion bearings, but if rack has had oil, not grease in these are often still good.
All these parts are available here, from most Mini parts shops.
