Got a look at the son's Moke today. It's build date is 4/78 and the engine number is 12YD/Ta/H**** S About 1/2" gap between the numbers and the S

Any clues?

That is a Morris 1100S engine number.

Edit, I think the S could stand for Sleeved.

1100S confuses me - is that 1275 or 1098?

12Y is an Australian engine, preceded 12YD.
Used in Morris 1100S and probably early 1275 Moke.

They called the 1100S that because it was an 1100 body, but with the same cc (1275) as an S.
it's called `marketing'... :lol:

That engine number is from a Morris 1100S. It is in no way a Moke number.
12 = 1275
Y = Australian Manufacture
D = 4th variant = Morris 1100S (C = Mini K, G = Export Moke)
Ta = Remote centre change 4 speed. (A moke would have a "U" not a Ta)
H = High Compression

They stopped making engines in Australia in late 74.
The numbering system that was used on this engine was changed twice by the time the 78 Moke was made.

The 12Y on the radiator cowl would not be related to the engine number.
The 12 may refer to 1275 and the Y may mean made in Australia

The 12Y engine was the early 1100S engine but it was not a Moke engine.

They figured that the public knew what a Morris 1100 was. Just like the public knew what a Mini Cooper was.
So you if stick a 1275 in a Mini Cooper it becomes a Mini Cooper S, so they figured the same thing with the 1100.

OK just to muddy the waters even more the compliance plate says AKPPB18Y - that should mean 998 engine :? numerals on cowel and compliance plate are the same. I'm begining to think someone has swapped the engine and tried to make the cowel number look like a 12Y to match. It has drum brakes not discs

The letter "S" at the end of the engine number of some of the later 12Yd Blocks means that they are factory sleeved. From what I learnt, at the end of production Leyland had some bad castings and they were so pourous that they had to get them sleeved and these blocks were marked with an S at the end of the engine number. I have one of these blocks which I have re sleeved back to std again.

So how thick are the sleeves? Can they be rebored or do you have to resleeve each time ? How are the sleeves fixed? Is it a straight foreward process to remove and replace?

AFAIK you should be able to get at least a couple of overbores from a re-sleeved engine...to sleeve a bore is around $100-200.

Max overbore recommended on a `factory' sleeve was +.020".
However, you can bore it right out and thicker sleeves are available, GR can sleeve back even 1380s successfully to std.

Wombat they are pressed in, they sit against a shoulder at the bottom.
