Post subject: | Two Speed Wiper Motor Wiring |
This topic has been discussed many times here and in other internet forums but I've yet to find a clear answer, so here goes in the hope some kind member can do a few tests for the benefit of the Ausmini community. I have a two speed wiper motor (Lucas 12AUW) in a 1970 MK II Cooper S as part of the BLMC factory Special Production Order 41 (Police specification). The correct Lucas two speed wiper switch (part # BHA4786, which comes from the MGB) has been replaced sometime in its past life by a single speed equivalent. I am refitting a new two speed switch but would prefer to not use 'trial and error' when connecting the wiring as I don't want to do any damage. A lot of the discussion to date has been about the strange way in which the self park option works on the 12AUW, requiring some unique switching. Could someone with a two-speed wiper in their car (Clubman most common) test the voltage of each of the four wires (at the wiper motor end) with the switch in each of its three positions - OFF - ON LOW - ON HIGH. I've marked the terminals A, B, C and D in the photo below. I believe the colours of the four wires at the wiper motor end are Green, Black (Green trace), Red (Light Green trace) and Blue (Light Green trace) not in that order, but please confirm. I believe the four wires at the switch end are Black, Black (Green trace), Red (Light Green trace) and Blue (Green trace). ![]() |

If I remember tomorrow, I will dig out the test harness I made up from a wiring harness, it also includes the switch, so I can give you the correct details. |

Thanks, much appreciated. I await the results with eagerness. |

Me too, I want to put a 2 speed in my 70 `ex-Matic' and give the single speed one to my mate for his Mk2S resto. I have the motor & 2 speed toggle wiper switch, I just need to know where the 4 wires go to... ![]() |

Sorry fellas, just ran out of daylight hours with other things happening today but will definitely get the info for you. |

Many thanks, and no time pressure from my viewpoint; mine's a long term restoration project. |

I was going to take the results of the test that 64cooper has kindly offered to do and then work out how the switch operates in each of its positions to decide the wiring configuration. |

I wonder was there ever a wiring diagram done for the last Mk2 Ss with this setup? I've never seen one. |

I've never seen one. Neither have I. The one in the Black Book workshop manual has single speed wiring diagram for the Mk II series and then it goes straight to the Clubman range which has the two speed wiper, but different switch. Below is a link to the diagram for the MGB which is the source of the switch I'm using, but I think the wiper motor may be different (12W instead of the Aussie 12AUW). Even so the wiring may be the same. http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/wiper3.htm |

Thanks for that, I'll cobble some wiring to a spare motor and bench test it tomorrow... ![]() |

Thanks John. That's reassuring as the two speed motor on my car is currently wired that way, including the earthing of the body. It's most likely that a previous owner simply replaced the switch with a single speed version. Now we just need to decide on the wiring at the two speed switch end. I guess it's possible that Lucas were smart enough to make the terminal numbering the same on both the Clubman rocker switch and the MG toggle switch. Let's wait and see what 64cooper and/or Doc come up with. |

I have both the 2 speed toggle switch and a Clubby rocker one so I'll check the pinout for both. |

Doc - what's the Lucas part number and date on your two speed toggle switch? Whilst the BMC part number is BHA4786 it appears there are several Lucas part numbers. The one Paul Gulson was selling on eBay last week was 34482A 10 64, mine is 35927A 33 07 and I'm sure I've seen at least one other version of the Lucas number. Note that the wiper switch is different to the lighting switch which externally looks similar and has similar OFF/ON/ON positions. |
