with the driveshaft/cv joint off the car.. how loose should the cv joint be? it's been degreased, ready for new boot/grease, but just want to make sure it's still in good condition.. at the moment it all moves relatively freely with a little bit of play..

cv joint is off disc brake car.

Mine have done over 130,000 miles, you can feel slop when you grab & twist the driveshafts. But they don't click on full lock, so are still OK in my book.
Just make sure they are clean, no chipped balls or tracks, and grease em good with CV grease.

cool.

got some castrol LMM.. do you just pack it all into the boot as tight as you can, then put the CV strap on? should I fill up the CV joint with grease before putting the drive shaft back in?

sorry for the noob questions!

Tim.

edit

there's no axial slop.. just a bit fore/aft a bit wobbly in its action, but twisting the driveshaft in the cv joint when it's all straigh it feels good.

Fill the joint first before you put the axle back in it.

nah, you need some air space in it for turning etc. otherwise the grease will squidge out
