When my grandfather had my Moke years ago, it only ever had lap seat belts.

When going for a RWC, am I going to have issues if I only have lap seat belts? The car is a 2 seater Moke, registered in the past as a commercial vehicle.

Early mokes only had lap belts, but a '78 moke will need to have lap/sash (unless the inspectors doesn't know his stuff).

That's why later mokes have a seat belt mounting bar - it's not a roll bar.

Ok I guess I'll have to get some mounts welded to my seat belt mounting bar, which I was going to do anyway to fit a retractable lap/sash.

I'm pretty sure they still had lap belts in '78. They definitely did in '77. I don't think the roll bar came in until the end of '79 with the facelift and even then it was an option.

Being a commercial vehicle they did not have to comply with ADRs intended for passenger vehicles (usually given a couple of years grace).

As Timbo said, the seatbelt anchorage bar - that white bar that looks awfully like a rollbar but isn't - didn't come until the facelift model of November 1979.

After that point, the bar was standard - with retractable lap/sash seatbelts - on the Californian, and was an option on the standard Moke. It was not available on the Moke pickup.

So, your 1978 Moke should definitely have lap-only seat belts to be standard.

The funny thing is that many people have had trouble getting their standard 1980 or 1981 Mokes registered with the bar and retractable belts fitted, as some of the authorities don't know that they were standard fitting on Californian Mokes.

I have not heard of anyone having trouble getting their Moke registered with lap-only belts.

If you go for safety and have a rollbar fitted with retractable, or only lap/sash, belts fitted, you may not be able to get the car registered without and engineer's certificate. Yet, as long as your insurance company is happy with it, there seems to be no problem fitting it after the car is registered.

Watto beat me , have a look at these brochures (from my big thread in mini mini's) , 1980 and 1981 spec have the bar with retractables , all prior were lap belts (including the Californian with tombstone seats) .
























Californian Merchandising kit (4 pages of newspaper print ready ads the dealer would cut out the one they wanted to use and give it to the newspaper to copy and print , this is in the days of electronic printing and not the lead printing blocks like the mini ones below)

Probably because it sounds a lot cooler than "seatbelt holding, white bar thingy" and people know what it means.

Lots of commercial vehicles used lap belts right through the 80s and 90s, It would not surprise me if there were new trucks being sold with lap belts today.

Ooo good idea! Though we'll have to wait and see what colour is under the roll bar mounts. The car has been at least 3 colours. It started in Hairy Lime Green (well I presume it was Hairy Lime Green), then was yellow, and now is orangeyred.

You could get a magnetic P plate and paint it to match the car, then stick the magnet over the holes.
