Post subject:  Rotten egg smell on the Rover
Hi all,

My car smells rotten egg after a drive. It's an '86 model.
Any idea what could cause this?

Its a chemical process , unleaded fuel burnt by the engine and then the exhaust gases pass through the catalytic converter which then filters the exhaust emissions to the factory set standard, the now filtered exhaust gases contain a percentage of Hydrogen Sulphide which is the egg smell.

Before you jump int any conclusions of what the smell is PLEASE get your charging system checked as you might have an OVER CHARGING PROBLEM. If this is the case the smell would be coming from the battery. Make sure you get it seen to ASAP as this will cause lots of complications especially on an injected vehicle besides the corrosion that the Battery fumes will cause. Be careful and do not cause any sparks near the battery as the fumes coming from the battery are actually very volotile being Hydrogen. Make sure everything is turned off in the car even the interior light before you disconnect battery and do this in an open and ventelated area. Check the condition of the battery and fluid level. Fault usually is the cause of the Voltage Regulator being Faulty.

Regardless weather it is the battery or the exhaust Hydrogen Sulphide is poisonous and needs to stopped. Actually when you get to the point you can't smell it anymore you are about to DIE so get it seen to.

not only is it poisonous - it's HIGHLY EXPLOSIVE!! - 10% hydrogen is as explosive as 100%

you shouldn't be driving it, but if you do, and you smell it, open the boot and have a whiff, but not if you have a cigarette in your mouth

If it is the battery/charger, get it fixed, endless globes (who knew vans had 4 licence plate globes....) later I think my van is OK!

Let alone the danger :shock:

Hi again,

Thanks for all the replies. I got scared for a bit, but I think it's all good now.
Btw, alternator is supposed to convert DC to AC right?
So, the voltage that goes back to battery should've been AC, no?
Checked the battery with multimeter, got a reading between 13-14 volt.
However, I didn't get any numbers on AC...just on DC.

Battery doesn't seem to have any bulging or acid build up whatsoever as well...

Nope, Alternator generates AC, but has diodes to rectify it back to DC, So it should be DC at the battery. Somewhere around 13.8 V is quite normal.
